Need SENKO Help!

Featured Replies

I REALLY dont know how to fish a senko, even though i have alot. i fish them texas and wacky rig but never catch anything, any help?

do you jerk the senko? senko was developed as a jerkbait

also look at the 2nd post on this board

My #1 way to fish a Senko is with a 6-6 MH Spinning rod with 8 t0 10 lb. mono. I use a 3/0 wg hook and a 4" senko ( no wight) I love skipping it under docks and trees , ect.

In the spring and fall, I find that the fish want the Senko moving so the advice to twitch/jerk them is good.  During summer months, I just "dead stick" it and let it fall slooooowly on a semi-slack line.  If it hits bottom I jig it up and let if fall again -- if no takers, reel in and try again.

Check out the article that I have on the Bass Resource Front Page.  "Attacking Wooden Docks" speaks of how I fish a Senko around docks that are on my home lake.  I have found that fishing Senkos around docks, wacky-rigged, is one of the most productive ways to fish them, especially during the dead heat of summer.

I fish quite often for bass with senkos. I pretty much always texas rig them. Then I just cast it out and let it fall. More often then not, bass will take it on the fall. If no take on the fall I'll jerk it and let it fall again a few times, then I'll reel in and cast elsewhere. When I get a bite I'll watch my line straighten out and then hookset. I'll usually fish it near a weed edge or right in the weeds, or near drop offs. I rarely wacky rig. I also find the senko falls best when used with mono line. The action is not the quite the same on braided line.

Heck I actually caught that pickerel on a senko using the same technique.

If you're moving that Senko a lot, you're making the #1 mistake that new Senko users make.

By all means, using Senkos as twitch baits or jerkbaits will work at times, but the bait does its best when you do nothing.  Just cast it out, let it fall on a slack line and let the bait do its thing.  When it hits bottom, let it soak and deadstick it.  After the soak, lift the rod up and repeat.

If no takers on a few casts, add a slight twitch here and there.  This is the maximum amount of action I have ever had to add to Senkos.

Also, do not avoid fishing them weighted.  I like a small screw in weight on a 5" Senko rigged on a straight shank 4/0 round bend Gammie.  Toss it around standing timber and flooded wood and let it fall straight down.

Weightless is the best. I fish them around very thick cover like a fallen tree or weeds. You can cast them or I had luck flippin them. They are a great way to catch fish just dont use them all the time there are other great was to catch big fish.
