The weather is always a concern when on the  water and the wind can cause the fish to bite or not.  But when a storm comes along it can pay off big if you wait it out and throw a green and yellow popper along a wind protected shoreline.  

There's always the small aggressive males along all the weed fronts during post spawn.  Constant action but small fish, any small popper or leech type hair fly works great.

fly castin fer smallies is the most fun I've ever had fishin fer anything. My uncle once landed a 9lb. smallie on a 4-weight outfit :o . Talk about a scare.

That's a remarkable fish. There aren't more than a handful of guys alive on the planet that have landed a 9 lb smallmouth. Good for your uncle. He would be the man for you to learn all about flyfishing for bass.

That nine pounder would have been the new state record here in Maine.

Now it was estimated at 9-3 but I think it was around 8-13. If I had a picture I would post it.  

Scales definitly make bass shrink.   but this post is about flyfishing.  I was never one who cared much for fly fishing for bass.  I think y'all know by now that baitcasting is the only way to go for me when it comes to LMB.  but I truly loved to flyfish for trout in the famed Catskill rivers and even farther north in NY.  I just love the history of Catskill fly fishing, the Beaverkill, Neversink, West branch, Willowemoc, and so many streams without names but with beautiful native brookies and browns.  the crisp spring air.  The jolt of cold when you enter the water.  the hypnotic rhythm of false casting.  God it was heaven on earth.  The wonderful thing about trout is that they tend to live in such beautiful places.

I'm with you avid. I never fly fished like my Dad & brother its always been casting; I remember how my Dad got me into it. He bought three old casting reels from the late 1050's at an estate sale and gave me them saying "if you can cast and catch fish with these your're preety good fisherman. I was in our backyard a heep of hours with those reels, but I learned it and caught some big bass over the last 35 yrs.
