Ultralight Bass Fishing

Featured Replies

Is there a part of this site or is anyone aware of a site about ultralight bass fishing.  I have been using an ultralight with 4lb test exclusively for about three years now and have never done better.  It seems the bass in the lake I fish here in PA seem to prefer a smaller bait.  I find it more of a challenge allthough it does limit the areas I can fish, ie no heavy cover.  But hey, I am just out to have fun.  Anyone else doing this exclusively or even semi-exclusive.  Thanks.

Dave, There are several UL fans on this site. I am sure they will chime in if you have any questions.

I'm one of the ultra light fans.  The 12" - 14" spots in my home lake (Allatoona) are a lot more fun on 4 lb test line and my Ray Scott Light Tackle rig.  I have also found I get more bites on light line, and I don't lose any more fish than I used to as long as I remember to retie after every fish or hang up.  My goal is to catch a 5 lb bass on 4 lb test line.  My best so far was a 4 lb female this spring at Charlie Elliot on the 4 lb line.  I do use heavier tackle when fishing heavy cover.

Dave, I am a huge UL fan with a 13.9 on 6lb as my largest bass. I wrote tons of articles and even an eBook on the topic. It is a big part of my attack. I dedicated several years of tournament fishing to exclusively be done with UL/light tackle and I waxed guys. What is your question?

I guess I am just looking for articles on UL fishing.  Lures and techniques.  I crappie fish a lot and end up catching a lot of bass, so I guess I am somewhere in between the two species.  What do you all use in terms of line and lures?  I am using Pline Fluoroclear and am very happy with it.  I use small jigs out of the Yammamoto crappie kit and some Charlie Brewer jigs suspended under a bobber.  I have in the past used 4" senkos but have not had any luck with them this year.  I love Gary's stuff but feel for my fishing the slider stuff may be better and cheaper.  Any thought are appreciated.

I almost forgot, where can I find these articles Earthworm77?

I love ultra-light fishing for "anything that swims" !

In fact, the only reason I use a heavy rod so much nowadays, is that I have no choice when throwing 8", 6 oz swimbaits.

Peace,

Fish

PS, Ya' gotta' hook em' first, then you can worry about landing them :-)

Daverph, Ive yet to find a site or forum dedicated to ultralight fishing.   I prefer it to any other type of fishing.

Fish Chris, Ive seen your familiar face in an issue of Cat-Fish Insider havent I ?

I thoroughly enjoyed your imput.  I will also enjoy your web site.

I found Ultra Lite fishing to be very fun until I hung the big one. Broke my line.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzSNAP! :'(

I learned to use some thin but very strong braided line.

So then what line is good in 4lb test?  I used the yozuri hybrid ultra soft in 6lb and hated it.  Any suggestions, I have been using 4lb pclear fluoroclear.

Why do you not like braid? I have caught several fish using thin 10#Power Pro braid, NO leader, and weightless trick worm.

I think the point is in the challenge of using light line and light rods.  The onus is much more on the angler, rather than the gear, to haul in a big bass.

There is nothing more fun than hauling in a big bass on an ultralite. I caught my PB on one. 7.5 lbs on 4 lb line. You want to talk about a fight; man we were scrappin for what seemed like an hour. ;D.

Lately, my new goal has been to catch a 4LB+ on a fly rod. I've already hooked into a monster this spring. He broke my 10 LB leader on the hookset. :-[

man, i can't go as light as some of you guys. i use 8# sunline bass special, a copolymer with the diameter of 2# mono.

coupled with the ray scott reel and a stiff 6'6 team daiwa rod.

So whats the deal with braid?  I have never used it and know nothing about it.  What is a good brand and size?  Thanks.

Dave

It is good to see that some one like the challenge of landing a fish with out a winch cable and a pool cue.  I use UL about 75 percent of the time.  It is the angler not the equipment.

I used to fish ultralight all the time, but ive gotten away from it since I lost a huge bass on 6lb test.

my biggest with an ultralight was a 4-1/2 lb smallmouth on 4lb test.  hell of a fight.
