that corn post got me thinking.   people will chum for trout, carp, and catfish, but what about bass.

What do folks who chum for bass use as an attractant?

You can chum for bass inderectly, dough balls or pelletized food attract minnows to the area where you place you chummed.

chumming in freshwater is illegal...... So we let the Ca DFG do it for us :-) The trout wagon = a big chum bucket on wheels ;-)

I don't chum for bass but I do dispose of earthworms in the hopes that they will be eaten and help preserve the health of the fish eating them, be they bass, bream, catfish, whatever. I have no control of what happens to the worms when they hit the water.

But seriously, I don't chum for any fish. I do throw out my redworms and nightcrawlers out at the end of a day if I am using them for bait. The bream get 'em mostly.

I have never heard of anyone chumming for bass and I would guess they would only be interested in minnows, which would be too expensive for chumming unless you caught them yourself.

I suppose it is illegal in Califorinia and probably other places as well, but here in Florida you can go to a feed store and buy bags of Catfish and carp feed.  Maybe they are not considered sportfish???   I dunno, but it's common for bluegill fisherman to thorw out handfulls of bread crumbs. In NY folks would throw out handfuls of corn then put a few on a hook for trout.  And in the saltwater, well, fuggedaboudit.  They chum for everything.

I kind of like the idea of "hunting" for the bass, but there are times when I'm shore bound and wouldn't mind a good "bass call"  maybe if I rattled two male bass together the others would come in  ;D

Chumming for bass, huh? I have never done it but does anyone else that has been here awhile remember the fellow that was in a wheelchair that used roadkill for chum? ;D

This was back when I was started posting almost 2 years ago. Anyone else remember?

For the newer guys,

Supposedly this guy was bound to a wheel chair and on his way to the lake he would pick up roadkill.

When he got to the lake he would put the roadkill in a bucket that had holes drilled in it and hang the bucket from a tree. Eventually the maggots from the roadkill would work their way out of the holes in the bucket and "chum" the water. He claimed it worked pretty good. :-?

Maybe you can try that! ;D

That's a great Idea!  The next time I bring my daughter fishing I'll haver her run out of the car on the way to the spot and scoop up some road kill.  I can't wait to explain to her she needs to shimmy up a tree so we let the maggots fall on us.

My way of chumming for bass is to add brush piles with a 6 in flake of alfalfa hay cross tied in the center.      Alfalfa works well on shad and minnows and you know what that draws.

Chumming is not illegal in Tx.
