Snagged fish

Featured Replies

General Question.

Why do snagged fish feel heavier???

Do fish snagged in the belly/eye (Anywhere but the mouth) have a chance of living after release? Worried about the parasites forming on the "wound"...

When a fish is hooked in the mouth, you can control the fishes head which makes them easier to control and land.

A fish foul hooked anywhere but the head is like pulling dead weight without any control of where the fish is going.

Matt.

Let's just think about the survival aspect for one minute. If you get hooked in the leg does it decrease you chance of survival? They will more than likely do quite well.

Understand, snagged fish = deadweight. Now I understand the importance of "steering" a fish.

Hmmm but compare a 2/0 ~ 5/0 Hook with the size of the Bass... That's going to be a huge hook run into our legs  ;D

5/0 hook: you have something to look forward to because you probably will get hooked by one. If you fish often enough you definitely will.

I think the 'heaviness' has more to do with the fact that you're trying to reel in a fish facing 90 degrees from you vs. the normal 180 degrees; facing towards you.  There's a lot more water resistance to overcome with a snagged fish.

As far as the wound, they'll probably do just fine unless you've ruptured an internal organ and that's not as likely as trying to remove a gut-hooked hook.

Bingo!

A foul-hooked fish is like fighting the broadside of a barn. Hooked in the mouth they're coming or going more parallel to the line.
