Do outdoor stores such as Bass Pro or Academy sell live redworms? I'm looking to start a worm farm for science class. (and raid it when I go fishing ) I figure they should, but their online catalog doesn't. If you have any tips on how to do this, they're more than welcome. Thanks

Cabelas does in the catalog they ship them live. There is a member here named LANE , i believe she is a bait dealer also.

Why dont you go to a local bait shop, feed store, sporting goods store, meijer, walmart, or even some gas station, all which you can buy worms at. But yes, cabelas does carry live bait.

There is also a guy on ebay who sells them by the pound. Try an ebay search for live worms.

My neighbor had his own "red wiggler" worm bed out behind his house. He died several years back and I don't remember a lot of the details he gave me about keeping the bed active and healthy. I do know that he used mulched up and rotted maple tree leaves for the beds and deposited solid table scraps, mostly vegetable matter, on them. He also picked up egg shells from a local diner and the worms would almost sit up and beg for those. He basically treated it like a living compost heap. All you need is just a few to start your own production. If you get the bed to the right Ph, moisture level and temperature, you can put the worms and start farming. Google "worm ranching" or "farming" to find out the correct way. Best of luck.

Though there is a local lake, the only local bait shops are on the lake's property, which you need to pay to access. Plus, the Worm Farming kit is sold at Bass Pro Shops.

I saw you lived in OK, so, find the nearest grain elevator and ask if you can dig some worms in between the grain bins.  They usually are the best place to find worms because they have all of the waste grain that drops in between them.

The eggs come in alot higher quanity, the're easier to ship, and the're stable. She always spreads them in the winter and by summer the're all over. She has ordered three or four diffrent kinds before and know for a fact she has ordered red worms for her compost. Try looking for worm eggs for sale on the Web.

I am not a live bait dealer, but I do have MAJOR connections with worm farms. I invented

and patented, "Worm-Glo", which is sold to many of the worm farms. I recommend the

Eisenia Hortensis, aka European or Belguim redworm. They can withstand both extreme

heat and cold conditions, and make for an EXCELLENT bait worm. The Hortensis is easy

to get and is VERY prolific. If you send me a PM, I will give you contact information for several

worm dealers/farms.

Wow! I can't believe you invented Worm Glo! That stuff rocks!                                                                                                                         I've called Bass Pro and asked if they carry live worms, and the person said no. But the last time I went they definitely did. Same case with Sportsman's Warehouse. Then I called all the local bait shops, and they're all closed for the winter. I don't have time to go and check each store, but I can't wait for shipping either. So, does BPS carry Redwoms or not?

- Plus, will I need to remove some worms every once in a while to keep the population from overloading?  :-/

 I know most wal marts carry red worms and night cralers

they hide them on the back of sporting goods in frig.

What part of Oklahoma do you live in? Bass Pro does not carry the live redworms,

and neither does Academy. Unfortunately, you may have to order the redworms.

There was a pretty large redworm breeder in Oklahoma, but he relocated to Georgia

over the holidays. Depending on where you live, I may be able to locate some nearby.

Yes, you will have to remove the older/larger worms after a period of time. Thanks for

Okay, thanks everybody! I didn't think I'd get so much help. One of my fishing buds gets all his live bait from Wal-Mart. He said they carry nightcrawlers and then "Panfish and Trout Worms." They are thin, very red, stretch out far, and are slimy. Are these redworms?

Yes, they are redworms and I believe that they are the Hortensis variety! You will need to

purchase some Canadian peat moss while you are at Wal-Mart. They will need to be transfered

to a larger bin with a lid. I used the Rubbermaid storage containers and drilled air holes in both

the lid and upper portion on the container. The worms that you purchase at Wal-Mart will be

older redworms, so they will not reproduce like the younger ones. Good luck with your project!

Yeah, right now I have a Rubbermaid Container, but am looking at the Frabill Worm Habitat (www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=37100&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults) because it is better for keeping the temperature regulated. The place where the worms will be stored is not heated at night or on the weekends.

P.S. I can't wait to freak out my science teacher with your Worm-Glo! ;D

P.P.S. I got some of those Panfish & Trout worms, and they are reproducing. I know because when

I dumped them out to put them in the bedding, there were 60 big and dark worms. Now there are all these small and pale worms.

The Frabill habitat looks pretty cool, but don't use the Fat and Sassy bedding. Get the

Canadian peat moss. If you PM me your UPS address, I will send you my top secret

worm food. They lay bright green egg capsules, so keep an eye out for the eggs.
