Pitching Technique

Featured Replies

When you are pitching Jigs do you:

Twist your wrist so the reel and rod are slightly twisted (reel handle pointing up to the sky) or do you keep the reel flat (reel handle to the right or left)?

Hope this makes sense...lol

Thanks

I think mine be pointed down  :-/

To be honest I really haven't payed a whole lot of attention to how I hold it. I just know what feels comfortable in my hands. I concentrate on the tradjectory of the bait and the target.  To me if it's more comfortable for a person to stand on there head and pitch and still hit the target quietly and accurately then thats whats important.  Each person is different and I think what ever feels right is the best

I tilt the reel so the handles face up (if you cast and reel with opposite hands the handles would be facing down).  I think the idea is that its a more natural way for your wrist to flex.  I get better distance and less backlashes when I do it that way (same goes for overhand casts).

I have a tendency to point my reel crank up for all casting, including pitching. It's more important for long casts that you do this. For pitching/flipping it's just habit for me. The handles will be up for right handers. I think that Catt is a lefty. :)

No actually Ronnie I had to go get a rod and it's definitely handles up

Either brain dead or a case of can't remember ****  ;)

i agree.  for me, the reel is tilted to the side with the crank facing the sky.  feels most comfortable for me this way.

I am lefty and use a right retrieve reel.   I end up with the reel being somewhere between 90 degrees and upside down, handle facing down when at 90.  (the shorter the rod,  the more it goes upside down, on longer rods it's more of a 90.)  That made a lot more sense in my mind than in type.  ...lol

Won't handles always be down, regardless of hand, as long as you don't switch hands to cast/pitch?

I am 13, and have not been bass fishing for all that long, so I don't know some of the terminology. which technique is pitching?

Key words here, "as long as you don't switch hands". Catt & I are right handed with cranks on the right side of the reel. Switching hands is mandatory and the reel crank points upward. Does this make sense?

I'm with Alpster.  I switch hands

Being left handed mine ends up pointing down when I pitch but up when I cast.  I think it was just what become habit when I was learning

If "handles up" is 12:00 and "flat" is 3:00, then I am about 1:00 or 1:30.... snacktime. ;D

I use a right-hand retrieve and pitch with my left hand, the handles are down when I pitch.  The handle of the rod goes outside my arm and away I go.

I point mine to about one or two o'clock....

Yes, perfect sense.  You guys had me sitting there thinking how do they pitch with the wrists rotated the other way!  ...lol  I can't bend my wrists like that!  ...lol
