Fishing a particular spot in high wind

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I wanted to find out what is the best method to fish a particular spot when the winds start whipping through.

Here's my situation. I want to use a drop shot or C-rig over and area that around 15 or more feet deep. Is it best to anchor down? or perhaps just use a drift sock? or perhaps just use my trolling motor against the wind?

With these rigs i'd prefer to not be blown around by the wind having my baits constantly moving around.. As I understand it, especially with drop shotting, I want to have my bait fairly stationary in one spot.. The winds where I live can kick up at any time from 12 mph to 2m mph or even more!

Any advice would be appreciated...

With high winds and high rolling waves, I like to tie up if possible.      Whether you anchor or tie up, when winds are higher than normal,  I like to attatch the anchor rope directly to the bow hook so I'm pointing straight into the wind.    This keeps the boat from being pushed sideways.   When using a side Cleat, this seems to put more motion and strain on the anchor.

If drift fishing, the drift anchor is a good choice.

If I believe a spot hold fish its anchors away regardless of wind conditions   ;)

I too am beginning to use my anchor more oftenm.  Tie it through the bow hook, boat directly into the wind.  However, the boat will still move from side to side, but not as dramatic as if you tied to a side cleat.  If I wanted to stay on spot in high winds, the anchor is coming out.  I have found trying to do the trolling motor in high wind and fish is just not as effective for me.  Too much movement, casts get screwed up, retrives are weird, etc.  Its anchors aweigh  for me.!

does anyone think dropping an anchor in the middle of a spot you plan to fish will spook the fish. i mean here they are just hanging out when all of a sudden this big heavy weight comes screeming to the bottom kicking up a bunch of dirt. if i can i try to use my trolling motor.

You do not anchor where you think the fish are at... you back off twenty thirty yards or so ,, then drop anchor and cast past the spot holding fish and retreive thru it.
