Spinnerbaits for Prespawn

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I need some advice again.

I will be fishing a tournament at the end of April in Iowa (Pre-spawn) and I am looking to add a couple more spinnerbaits to my arsenal. What are some good colors sizes and blade choices?

I've never had much success with spinnerbaits in the past, but I don't throw them that often and one of my goals this summer is to learn to fish these properly.

Also, any other good prespawn bait ideas would be helpful.

Thanks,

Justin

I've had great success recently with Rattle Head's spinner bait 3/8 oz white/chartreuse skirt with double willow leaf blades gold/silver.

I'm also a firm believer in Stanley's Wedge and Vibra Shaft :)

Stanley Wedge 3/8 oz. white or blue glimmer skirt with small colorado front blade and a willow leaf on the rear.

Get the strike king bottom dweller. It is a 1 oz. spinnerbait and it will get deep.

I'm guessing that if the tournament is at the end of April and if it's typical natural lake in this part of the country that has shallow grass flats with clear water or if it has emerging lily pads you will likely have some fish in thses areas. If the wind is blowin' I would consider a S.O.B. Mini Me 3/8 oz size (the TJ special color combo works everywhere for me) with a #4 willow & #2 colorado tandem blades with their gamblers dust on the blades, this has been the most productive spinnerbait I have ever used for spring fishing. As an alternative consider an outkast tackle swim jig in a 1/4 or 3/8 oz size with a Yamamoto single tail grub as the trailer. The fish will also be chomping on a jerkbait this time of year, a couple of excellent choices would be a Pointer 100 in Charteuse shad if it's overcast or if the skies are clear a Pointer 78 in the Ghost Minnow or Ghost Sunfish colors along with a Rapala X rap in the Olive Green if the fish want a faster more aggresive jerkbait. That said you might be late enough in the spring when the fish will be hitting baits like senko's , Yamamoto spider grubs, lizards, Zoom Super Flukes etc., so be prepared to throw the soft plastics if they aren't hitting the horizontal baits. Good luck, I hope you do well.

Picasso and Strike King (KVD model) are two of my go to spinnerbaits! The Picasso double willow painted blades in red shad and Strike King's bluegill color are the two colors I use most during the prespawn. White with black scale pattern would be another skirt color I'd add as well. The weight varies on the conditions but I'm usually throwing either 3/8 or 1/2oz.

Thanks for all the help guys. This is the first tournament I am going to be entering in after getting pretty aggressive on the bass fishing for roughly three years now.

Definitely all the help I can get to win due to inexperience.

But hey, I have to start somewhere :)
