Problem setting hook w/baby paca

Featured Replies

Fishing my pond today with Baby Paca w 3/0 gamy ewg and could not get a hook set to save my life. Caught one fish out of about 10. Using MH rod and 14lb test Gamma Copoly , t-rig with 1/8 bullet. Bait was on hook just like nothing happened. Any suggestions?

My advice is to pierce completely thru the bait with your hook point and skin hook it back into the body just slightly.....this allows the hook point to cut thru the skin of the bait easily and get into the fish's jaw much easier than otherwise. This is a popular hooking procedure with many soft plastics.

Hope that helps and let me know if it works better for you.

Switch to a weedless hook and give it a try.

Smear some MegaStrike on the bait so the bass will hold onto it just a few seconds longer.

As you know, no slack in line when setting the hook and keep rod over your head until you know she is on and then reel like mad.

I have not had any problems setting a Texas rigged bait.  I just rip that rod over my head and hope I don't either fall down if fishing a pond or throw myself out of the boat.

Give those weedless a hook a try and let us know if they improve your hooksets.  ;)

Texpose the hook.

What kind and size hook are you using?

Have you considered that it may just be real small fish hitting your bait that are too small to hook?

This might sound dumb, but since that bait was not pulled down on the hook. Could those have been Bluegill bites?

The hook was a gamma3/0 ewg , I even quit skin hooking it and let the tip remain exposed. I got one of the fish close to the bank before he got off and it was 2-3 lber. Upon further inspection I may of had my drag too lose :;) Thanks for all the help

I think its just one of those days man! I have had days when every fish that looks at my bait comes in the boat and days when i miss every single hit!
