Naming fishing holes

Recommended Posts

My uncle and I like to name our favorite fishing spots. Here are a few with the reason why they got that name.

Chitland-- an island that is a great spot to restock "brown trout"

Chitburg-- a bank that serves the same purpose

Dolly Parton--- two big humps

SOB hole-- a spot where he caught 4 real nice spots and I only

                caught a dink

Deerbed-- a spot where we saw a group of deer bedded down

Toby ridge-- a ridge where I mopped up using my brother's rod/reel

Hawg Highway-- a creek where I caught my PB

Lunker lane-- a creek that has produced some nice fish

What about you?

Most of the places we fish are already named but if its not we usually just go by position on the lake. Guess we're just not as creative as you are. Might have to look into that idea might be a little less confusing.

Me and my brother name our spots. Either according to the size of the largest fish caught like "8 lb alley" or "5 lb point" or because of a feature the spot has like "alligator pipe" or "Peacock pond"  ;D

When me and my buddy go to our different ponds, we call them by the person who owns them or where they are located.

ex. Chris's pond

ex. Golf course pond

Not to creative but it gets us by

Yeah, a few of us here do it too.

-5 fingers.....a huge cove that has 5 points in it

-Dock Blvd.....this is a straight cut off the main lake that is about 1/3 mile long, 75 yards wide and has docks on both sides from front to back.

-Willow Point.....pretty obvious, big willow tree on a point (killer spot)

-The Forest....spot where I have about 30 brushpiles

-Tennis Courts....an area where stripers are found right often and there are some tennis courts up on the hill

-One Rock....awesome point on the main channel that has one huge rock on the bottom in about 25' with the main channel swinging about 10 yards from it.

-TableTop....small flat in 30' that tops out at about 15'. The top of this flat is only about 50' long x 30' wide

There's a few more good ones but these are the ones we talk about the most.

Most of mine are inappropriate but on one lake I have...

I have Yayo.....two grass lines that run parallel to one another around a point. One is a shallow China Weed line in 4' the other is a coontail line in 10'. At the edge of the second line it drops into 36'

Pepto-bismol.... A pink house on a hardly noticeable point where they replaced the retaining wall timbers about 4 years ago and just threw all the old ones into the water.

The names of the holes around here are well known Burns bottom, coppers bluff, turners bend, camp bend, mcghee bend. The only name I know of where it came from is pig pen. Theres a pig farm on the bluff above it and the rain washes all the crap into the river!

My buddies and I tend to relate them as "You know that one spot, where I got that one on the _____bait, no not that one, the one with the stump on it, no not that one, the one across from where we saw that drunk guy fall down?

Ok, good, its not that one, but its the one like 100 yards down the bank on the right. Wait, no, the left.

Yeah, couldnt get bit on that one. Maybe you should try that one spot where you got that....."

where I fish rock ledges go all the way across the river and between the ledges it is about 30 to 40 yards wide we call them troughs for about half a mile each trough has a name I'll just give a few.

-cattle trough-about ten years ago a dead cow was in the middle of this one

-rockin chair- a chair washed in on this one and hung up on a rock from a distance looked like a rocking chair.

-main trough- one of the widest and deepest of all the troughs

-broken trough- the rock formations doesn't go straight across the river there are a lot of offsets

-about 5 or 6 named after the person that likes to fish in them.

-Dog trough- my dogs likes this one to swim in they have a few rocks to rest on.

the cattle trough was a great place to fish all summer no one would fish it for the smell, I did catch smallmouth 23.2" that summer was worth the smell.

Cocodrie (Coco-drie) Lake; Cocodrie is Cajun for Alligator

Lacassine (La-cas-sine) National Wildlife Refuge is called Lack of Sense by the locals because you'll get skunked there more than you'll catch but there is that high percentage of Double Ds.

Coulee (Coul ée) Poulet (Po-let): Coulee is a small bayou and Poulet is a chicken so we bayou chicken now here where y'all will get lost; from that a Cajun gets Chickapin (type of bream) Bayou.

My oldest daughter called Toledo Bend titty bend

The Chicken Coops on Toledo Bend is an actual Chicken Farm under water where annually there are tens of thousands of Crappie, White Perch, Calico Bass, or Sac-a-lait caught and Biologist has no explanation as to why.

My favorite is Machine Gun Ridge because the bass hit your worm 5 or 6 times real fast like bream.

A small pond that Tokyo Tony introduced me to had no name so he called it 'BIG', because of the 4-6lbers that hes caught there.

When I fish offshore I call it 'no mans land' because it looks like I'm in the middle of nowhere but its actually my secret spot

"sand box" is what we call a section of the Schuylkill River.

The lake I go to in Canada has a lot of places my family has named.

"bass cove" is were I caught the biggest bass I ever caught.

"Beaver point" is where there is a lot of beaver activity

there are many stump fields and rock piles I just have them saved as stump1, stump2 or rock1, rock2 on my GPS

"the honey hole" is a spot the we catch a ton of pan fish all the time

"eagles nest" is a good spot that has an eagles nest. The tree blew down a few years ago and the eagles have moved their nest. but we still call that spot that name.

The rest of the places we just use the island's name on the map. What is nice is that most of the islands have a sign on them telling you the name.

Tombstone: Sunken rock looks like a tombstone

Spread Eagle:P0ND with two arms and a brush pile on an island in the middle

The Meadow lands: Large under water grass bed, that stinks in the morning

Metal Lands: Stripping pit with a sunken crane in the middle.

Industrial Hole; Pond stuck in the back of an Industrial park

the Puddle: small drainage pond, you gotta walk into.

The Chunk...Mauch Chunk Lake

I don't have a lot of names for spots locally but where we fish in Canada we have a bunch.

Mosquito Bay - Lots of the little buggers!

Crotch Bay - Not sure on this one, probably ex-rated!

Hagen's Bay - Buddies last name, his fav spot

Snowmobile Point - There is a vintage snowmobile left on this point, miles away from the nearest road or cabin. Kind of cool.

Leon's Island - one of my dad's favorite spots that only he fishes

The Gold Mine - an old abandoned gold mine, the walleyes here are a darker golden color, we thing based on the gold in the area. :)

Hole in the wall - A huge rock wall for miles and then all of the sudden there is this hole out of no where.

Ray Charles Bay - So many fish even a blind guy could catch them there.

Kat Corner - Can't go through this spot without catching cats, no matter what you are fishing for.

The Flat  about a 3 acre, 3 sided flat.  Used to be a small apple grove on top, some hardwood still stands.

The Nursery a golden gravel cove that tapers from 2.5 ft (small golden gravel) to 18 ft (large boulders in hard bottom.  Spawning dream

Brainrock bowling bowl cookie cutter rocks in a 14 ft pile, tapers out to 18 ft

I started this list and realized I don't have the time to finish it,...I'll be back to finish it later :)
