Need advice on fishing theses conditions

Featured Replies

With the understanding that all lakes have there own unique personalities how would you go about fishing in these conditions:

87 degress

bluebird skies

dead calm but stained water

Water temp: 71 degress

I spent 6 hours today and got skunked. Another guy who went out the same time caught 2 crappie.

I plan on going out several more times this wek and the conditions will pretty much be the same.

Any time the fish get lock jaw around here I switch to an x-rap xr10 usually silver, you may want a brighter color in the stained water, and power jerk the thing. i let the think stop for about a half a second then snap the rod down really aggresivly. I have had days that go from 3 hours of fishing plastics with nothing to show then switch to the x rap and end up making it a 15 fish day. your foreams will BURN after 20 mins of this but it works for me.

I will have to give that x-rap technique a try.

The conditions you describe do not necessarily mean adverse conditions. The water temperature if stable is agreeable, I take it you are in the north. Bass should still be a transition period. Some pre-spawn and some post spawn. You need to address the characteristics of the lake and how the bass may relate based on these conditions. When you state the water is stained is that normal or due to heavy runoff? If normal no problem especially with bluebird skies. More needs to be considered about the lake to find fish then just what is stated. Look more to the environment that the fish live in and less in your environment. I suspect you might be beating the bank, if so pull off for the post spawn bite especially as the sun rises. If you can describe the lake more maybe better advise can be given.

Been fishing clear bluebird skies, dead calm windless days, air temps raising from the 80 's until the 100 's and water turning from crystal clear to pea soup green since early December last year with the same baits:

Tail Less grub

Shad Assassin/ Super Fluke

Shakey head rigged finesse worms, grubs and reapers

Texas rigged grubs, finesse worms and reapers

In-line spinners

Heddon Baby Torpedo

Rapala Original Floating Minnow

The catch is not exactly with what but where.

Your lake may be in post spawn to summer transition, if the water down to 3' or so is 71 degrees. What this means is the adult bass have moved out of the spawning and either holding nearby or relocating. Try a T-rigged or C-riigged worm near wood, stick ups, rock, weed beds edges, etc, where the water drops off quickly. Also give a soft or hard jerk bait a try around the same area's. he original floating Rapala makes a good sub surface jerk bait fish slowly.

Whatever you do, don't do the same thing you did.

I agree it sounds kinda like a post spawn type pattern.  I have never just tore em up in those conditions, but will throw a c-rig or a tube tight to cover that is out away from the bank.  I think you have to really slow down at that time also.  All this ripping of jerk baits just under the surface don't sound like what I'd do at all.  The bass aren't as aggressive then and all that is going for is the reaction strike.  Remember this too:  Fish just may not have been biting then either.  Try a diff. time of day.  If it was morning, try evening.

Try any cover in the shade near shore. If no go, any grass out deeper, that's where I found them today. the bite is still weird though (post spawn). Caught a bunch of rats shallow, and only a couple of nice ones off the grass/rocks. Don't know the make up of your pond, but this time of year under the conditions you described, I look where the grass meets the rocks.

Hope this helps,

good luck!
