How to fish Uncle Josh Porkers

Featured Replies

I was reading a fishing report on a lake I'm going to this later today. In one of the fishing reports they were talking about all the success they had catching big bass using Uncle Josh jumbo porkers. I've never heard of this bait so I went online to the Uncle Josh home page but couldn't find it either. I did send a IM on the fishing report asking what exactly is the name of the bait and how do you rig and fish it. Plus I'll call the local BPS and Cabelas once they open to see if they carry this bait. If I can find it, can someone explain the different ways to rig this bait (I was guessing jig & pig) and what technique for fishing this bait in stained water? Thanks.

Strike King used to make a bait called the Pork-O and I did pretty good with it also. Don't know if they are still made.

This was top secret for many years but bassmaster came out with an artical on it this month so heres the how you do it

You can get them at Unclejoshbaits.com

go to that website and find the porker though search, when I checked it a few minutes ago it was on the front page

OK after you've done that let me explain how to fish it and rig it

You'll notice that the porker has a very unique shape almost like a leech, it has a fat head that tapers of towards the end.

To rig it you'll need a worm hook with a wire guard, you can get these a bass pro. Then all you do is take the hook  and run it though the head of the bait and out the top of the head, connect the weed guard and your done.

To fish it use it like a Jerk bait, simple twitch it twice, pause for two seconds, twitch it again three times, pause for two seconds, and repeat from the beginning all the way back to the boat or shore.Of course you'll need to vary your twitches and pauses to see what the fish want, but I always start out with the way that I describe above. Now you can throw it next to any kind of shallow weeds, docks, wood, or any other kind of shallow cover. The weed guard protects the hook so don't be scared.

I would recomend picking up a copy of BASS MASTER magazine, they just ran an article in it like fishing said. Was very intersing i have thought about giving it a try but will wait until the "Hype" is passed.

BPS Sells bassmaster copies rite now might want to get one before they change up (In a week i believe)

If I recall correctly, I remember my cousin using this bait for pike and caught a few bass on it. He nosed hooked the bait with a weedless hook and swam the bait letting it fall, swim the bait again and let it fall back down. I might want to pick up a gar of this since this is pike season prime time.

TrippyJai i think that when you use uncle josh porkers, good to soak it longer then let the scent last longer or something.

I don't think that this is in any way a new technique.  I know of people fishing the regualr pork rinds this way long ago, with the exception of the weedless hook.

Weedless hooks are nothing new either.  Its not so much a "secret" technique, as it is a "forgotten" one.  Sft plastic baits pushed pork to the wayside.  Some of us still use real UJ pork.

Almost anything hanging off a Johnson's Spoon appeals to bass.  A classic that has stood the test of time.

I loved the old Pork-O. Caught a lot of quality fish on "em, and was sad to see them discontinued.

Here's a very good alternative.
