Where/What kind of trailer hook to buy

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Got another question for you.

I have trouble finding trailer hooks to purchase in the store. What kind do you guys use as trailers, how do you rig them and where do you buy them?

1/0 or 2/0 serves most purposes just fine.

For buzzbaits, I use 1/4" surgical or airline tubing (the latter you can get at a pet shop - its clear vinyl), and slide a 1/4" section over the eye.  I then pierce the tubing with the bait's main hook, threading the trailer on to the hook bend.  This keeps the hook riding upright.

For spinnerbaits, I use smaller silicone tubing that I simply thread on after the trailer hook.  it just keeps it from flying off, as I prefer the trailer to dangle free on a spinnerbait.

I found them at my local walmart for around $1.96. they are the ones below. i have not had a chance to try them yet so i cannot give you a review. They come with a plastic piece you put on after you put on the trailer hook so it stays on.

I am frugal.  I buy catfish hooks at Walmart.  They work fine.  I have used these hooks for years.

I use gamakatsu g-stingers anytime I would use a trailer hook.

I've also noticed now that as fish thrash about on a spinnerbait/buzzbait they usually end up getting hung-up on the g-stinger also. Insurance.

Another frugal angler here, I use trotline hooks. I do sharpen them before I put them on though.

I just use the BPS brand trailer hooks.  Come in silver and red and are very reasonably priced.  The quality is also very good as well.

Later, :)

You guys using catfish or trotline hooks: is the eye large enough to fit over the main hook?  that's always been the issue with simply usintg any old hook for this.

That's the issue I usually have too

If you fish open water, try a #2 treble hook and then add surgical tube piece

If you started using War Eagles you wouldn't need a trailer hook...

The eye on the trotline hooks is more than big enought to fit over the barb on the spinnerbait hook. I get them at Wal Mart.

For hook keepers I use a hole punch and punch keepers out of plastic lids from peanut, coffee, and other cans.  After I get all the punch outs I need I use a ice pick to punch a starter hole for the hook.  Most of the time I put a punch out on bait hook before and after the trailer hook.  This allows the hook to swing free.
