water temp

Featured Replies

what temp is the lowest worth fishing in? we have had an extremely mild winter and all the ice is gone already. the water temright now is 38*.

you can catch fish in water below 35 degrees, but i dont think its worth it.  i would say once the water hits 40-45 give it a shot, and if it dosnt work then it will def work once it hits 50.  the water around here is around 40 at the moment i believe.

Fish can be caught anytime.

@Carrington,  I am from Richmond, do you know what the temp of the James or Swift Creek Res. is now?  Trying to gauge things in Richmond.  Thanks

I've had better days on the ice this year than I did any other time of year.  Don't let the weather stop you.  Look for the warm water, generally the deeper areas will be warmer.

I was braking a 1/4inch of ice with my boat earlier this year and had 8 bass in the boat by the end of the day. You can catch fish in any temp.

dont listen to us just go out on the water, its that simple the worst that can happen is you dont catch any but i guarantee you the next time you go out with cold waters you will have a better advantage then what u had the last time

thanks boys ! looks like im goin fishing on the weekend

Like they said, they are catchable as long as your lure can hit water, it can just be a little more difficult.

Weird how you say your having a mild winter up there in Quebec.. your alot further north than where I'm at in Indiana and we still have ice on the majority of our water - been a very cold and LONG winter here.

We'll be fishing here as soon as the launch ramps on the river are safe and free from ice. The lakes are still frozen over, but if they were open, I'd be out there for sure, regardless of the water temperature. If it's liquid and there are fish in it, GO FISHING!  :D

The Maryland state record was caught in 2008 by a guy who backed his boat into the area he wanted to fish to break up the ice so he could cast into it. Sure you have to fish a little different but there is no reason to avoid going.

Big bass are taken all the time through the ice. Here in Wisconsin we start fishing the first open water we can find. You may have to fish slower or even change your tactics a little, but every opportunity is a great one! 8-)

Ive caught bass on a standup jig & crawler , worked slow in cold weather low 30s.Let the jig stand on the bottom 10 seconds , then lift and move it a few ft...repeat.

Just because the water is cold or even frozen over bass do not stop eating, it simply means their metabolism rate slows down.

Many anglers opt for smaller lures during cold water periods I go the oppsite selecting large lures with the understanding bass feed efficiently (maximize food intake and minimize energy output).

This also does not mean you should always slow your presentation but it aint a bad idea, some of the hottest lures during cold weather are swim baits, lipless cranks, & deep cranks.

.....And if you don't catch anything, how ticked can you really be? Wouldn't you rather be on the water TRYING to catch them as opposed to sitting on the couch watching TV?

I don't waste my time unless it is in the 50's.  I live in Georgia though so it is above 50 ten months out of the year!
