clear water shallow flats. baits?

Featured Replies

i have found a long stretch of very clear shallow water.. approx 2-3ft. deep  on the edge of a lake here in indiana.  as i walk down the bank i can see some rocks but the bottom seems to be pretty clear of much cover.  long flat bottom appears to extend out about 20-30 yards.  i will be bank fishing.

ideas what to baits to use?

thanks

Well, in clear water i like to through a L/C pointer, but i'm not sure if they make one that goes only 2-3ft deep. Another good bait to use is a spinner bait with a white skirt.

Good luck!

I would throw a weightless watermelon zoom trick worm on a 3/0 gammy or a 5 in senko style bait on the same hook, also weightless.  If they are there they will not be able to resist either.

Good rule of thumb with clear water is natural colors and smaller lures

focus on the rocks. i would be throwing hard jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, senkos, and shaky heads. good luck

Shakey head. Also a lipless crank, cast it a mile, burn it back.Having trouble keeping it off the bottom, try the 1/4 oz.

Rapala floating minnow, rapala jointed minnow, buzzbaits in the mornings and evenings, soft jerkbaits, and very shallow running cranks.

two baits: jerkbait or shakey head natural colors and dont let the bass see you

First, are their fish using this location? You are still talking fairly cold water (<60F) so:

-Ditto the original floating Rapala, fished as a topwater. I like the #11 twitched when water <60F), and a #13 waked when above. A jointed #11 is a good waker too. These balsa Raps land as quietly as a bait can and trigger strikes really well.

-8cm X-Rap will fish shallow (>3ft) if you keep the rod tip up and give jerks upwards. A floating line (braid or mono) helps.

-Smallish paddle-tail grubs or shad bodies.

-Mepps Aglia #2 or #3

-Small jumpbait, if water is >60F. Zara Puppy is good (for northern bass), although I like 'em a little bigger (3-1/2").

-If waters warmer (~>60) a 6inch slim plastic worm; choose your rig, brand, and color.

thanks for all the ideas/suggestions.

the water temp is still a little cool. around 50.

i have not been able to go there yet.  i hope to tomorrow morning.

i have to walk down some riprap to get there.  it sure seems like there has to be some fish there.

once i do go i'll try what has been sugessted and report back.

i am relatively new to serious bass fishin....but am addicted. and have read so much here...i seem to be educated.  just have to put it to use now.  8-)  i really like how everyone shares.  very cool

1/16th or 1/8th oz (unless the wind prevents this) bitsy bug jig with a tiny trailer on 8lb fluoro when the bite is tough.

Skip the topwaters (except maybe the #11), and use a small jerkbait. Don't forget the pauses LOL!

Jerkbaits and senkos, use natural colors. Good Luck
