When to use a 10 inch worm

Featured Replies

Hey guys picked up some 10 inch worms the other day while I was at Bass Pro.  Wanted to know what conditions you guys throw them in.

Anytime you are looking for big bass! Or, whenever you feel like it. I have caught dinks on them as well.

NOTE: Best in murkier water conditions or overcast days

When you want to cut down the dinks.  From about mid summer on that's about all I use with the occasional stick bait!

Dinks will hit a 10 inch worm plenty... Trust me, I'm good at catching dinks.

I use the 10 incher in the mid summer on, but I like them on really sunny days in the spring too.

i've caught perch on them, all the way up to 4 pound bass on them.

and everything in between. (this is ontario 4 is a great bass)

obviously not trying to catch that perch on it, but they are GREAT for big bass

The conditions I would fish a big worm is for place I think will hold big bass. Creek channels, points, creek, rock piles, flats, and even the main channel. Summertime is near and that 10inch worm is right behind it. ;D

I fish big worms(and lizards too) most of the time. I find that the dinks will take them as well as the biguns, but not necessarily the other way around.

I like to use a 10" inch worm on a carolina rig.  I really only use them when I am trying to cull fish, but like others said they will also catch small ones.

Like others have said, anytime. I throw alot of 15 inch worms, custom hand poured, and yes, I have caught 8 inch bass on them.

To appease your confidence, wait for a time you're catching numbers with a 4-6 inch worm then switch it up with a 10 incher(worm, not dink ;))

I like to use it in the summer at night.

I use mine when it hits those hot dog days of summer. I read somewhere that when it gets real hot the bass would prefer one big meal. Don't know if it's true but last year on the 100 degree days I was catching more on them than the 4, 5, or 6" worms.

If you throw where dinks are then dinks you'll catch ;)

Last year I caught bass between 6 oz and 6 lbs on a 10" worm.

I would say use it when you want to catch fish. ;)

Anytime I am on the water. You will be surprised the number of fish you will catch that will not be any longer than that worm.

In my secret "lunker lake" (as i have named it), i toss a 10in red shad culprit along the shoreline at dusk, and move it as slow as possible.  Dont know what it is about the night falling but it always produces for me.

Hey fellas I dont mean to hijack this thread but what size and type of hook do you use with big worms? Ive heard 5/0EWGs but they just look so small on that big worm :;)

yea.... i agree... on the "what hook size for that size worm??

i have rigged with 5/0 EWG and it looks like a "dink"

compared to the worm??

what else would/could be used??

:-/

Bass inhale their pray and that worm just collapses and folds right up.A really small fish per worm size may have to flare it's gills twice to get the whole thing in.I could nose hook a 10 inch worm and still hook plenty of fish. They don't nibble like blugills.

Take that same "giant" worm and fold it up in your hand.It looks the same size or smaller than most of the other baits we use.The bass see the same thing too.It represents something slender and slithery that can be easily inhaled, crushed up,and swallowed.Thats why you can catch 8 inch bass on a 10 inch worm.

I have been trying to get one of my partners to understand that concept. He thinks the hook needs to be grossly oversized and shanked way down into the tail of the worm. ::)

So when do I like to throw a big worm? Basically anytime.I am curious to see what will actually latch on to it and I get a kick out of some of the little scrappers that will try to cram down thier gullet.Best times however are late spring and through summer, dirty water and at night.
