Topwater trouble

Featured Replies

I've been getting awesome action on topwater baits lately but cant hook the fish i tried everthing i know for topwater which isn't much and still haven't caught any fish but have missed probally 15 on the last two trips any tips thanks ;)

Your probably doing what everyone on here used to do, or still does- and that is setting the hook to early. You have to be patient enough to feel the weight of the fish first before you set it. I know I used to set the hook as soon as I seen a fish hit, and I was getting the same results as you. As soon as I took the time to learn that patience, my top-water results have improved greatly.

What type of lure are you using?

Wait about 2 seconds (less if you feel the weight of the fish before then) then reel up the slack and give him (her) the business end of your hook.

I had the same problem, I would get soo over excited when i saw a fish hit my lure and set the hook right away. I then learned to be patient and have been doing better ever since, like everyone is saying, wait till you feel the fish on the line then set the hook

Like they said you have to feel the fish on the line first.

I have seen quite a few times where the fish will explode on the top and miss.

When this happens, just let your lure sit there still and they will usually come back for a second hit at it.

Feeling the fish is a good idea but if I get a hit and the lure disappears or I see the line moving, I hit 'em. If a fish is there, I hit 'em again.

Sometimes if you wait to feel the fish he has already spit out the bait.

But most times with trebles on a topwater bite, they'll at least get a start of the hook in them anyway. If you are getting plenty of hits experiment with when to set the hook and go with what works.

If you do get a hit and miss, don't panic. let the bait sit for a few moments and start your retrieve again. Chances are, you'll get hit again.

I've been using a rapala skitter walk or a super spook jr and thanks for the tips

Exactly.

Another thing, bump up the size/quality of your treble hooks.

A larger red treble hook in the back has been known to make a (topwater) difference for me.

I had too teach myself to be more patient with this as well.  I have had success lately with a feathered treble hook.

Later, ;)

After you make your cast, try turning your head to the side.  Work your bait back to the boat, and try not to look at the lure.  Talking to your buddy works too.  This way you'll feel the fish before you set the hook.

All of this is good advice. You just have to weight till you either feel the fish or see your line moving off. I usually land fish that hit a topwater solidly.

x2 Good quality hooks make all of the difference. For example, Jitterbugs are a great bait with horrible stock hooks. A lot of baits have poor quality hooks out of the box.

Like most people here have said, don't just instantly hammer the fish.  You've gotta give it a moment before you yank on the hook.  One other thing that you may want to look at if you're using soft plastics (I skimmed the thread), is to make sure you're using the appropriate size hook for the lure.  If you're using a hook thats too small, you make be getting strikes that are behind the hook on the lure.  Never going to get a hookset that way.
