Early springtime Smallies

Featured Replies

The ice has been off for about a good week now. Water temps are around 30 - 33 degrees. What techniques/lures should be used at this time to target river/lakes smallies. As for location, where should I concentrate on at this time.

Hey fullspectrum, Where you at in WI? I'm in Stevens Point. I have not been able to get out yet this year but when I do I'll probly try deeper water with some rock or steep sloping rip-rap banks with a jig or a X-Rap. If I'm on the river I might try drifting a Fluke through some deeper pools. Try different stuff and when you get bit stay with what works even if it's slow.

I'm in Wausau.  I've been doing mostly walleye fishing so far, but would like to hit some smallies very soon.  Been fishing the Wisconsin River as of late.

Hey, I know this is a bass forum but how are the eye's biting? I know some guys on campus here that were getting them a couple weeks ago but I havn't heard much lately. Let me know if you get out for any smallies. I'm going to try and go Wenseday.

Brian, I'm going to school in Point but grew up in Platteville. Been to Baraboo several times.

Plastics are always effective (Fat Ika, Single Tail Hula Grub, single tail grubs and tubes), but this time of year jerkbaits ( Lucky Craft Pointers, Husky Jerks, X-Rap and Smithwick Rogues) really shine. In deeper water, 3/4 oz Ledgebuster Single Willow blade spinnerbaits. Don't rule out topwater, either!
