My parents have been fishing every weekend at a local resivour that has trophy smallies, largemouth and brown trout. This is the smallmouth she caught today with a sawbelly. It measured in at 20". I dont know the weight but I'm gonna guess somewhere around 3.5-4lbs. Beautiful fish.

On average a 20" smallmouth should weigh just under 4 lbs.

This fish is trim, so I'm thinking a bit lower in weight than "average".

Agreed!  Catch and release can help a fishery, but it can definitely also hurt it. Selective harvesting is often the best choice...

Selective harvesting is the way to go but the 20 inchers shouldn't go in the frying pan. JMHO

I totaly agree with keeping and eating some of your catch, but keep the small ones and release the big ones. If you want "proof" of your catch, take pictures. The big ones make los and lots of "babies" to replenish the fisheries, the barely legal ones are a lot tastier.

What would you preffer : the meat of a 20 years old cow or a 6 month old veal ????

No offense but that smallie is so thin to reach it's 20 inches it must have been an old one and left in the lake. Taking it has been caught within the past few weeks it should be fattening up for winter. I know to well about guessing weights and getting different opinions good and bad, but that fish wouldn't even go 3lbs. Gortons or Van De Camps would be a better meal and CHEAPER than the drive to catch that fish I am 100% with Brat. If there are trophy fish in the lake this one was from it is because other anglers have put fish like shown back to become trophies. Beautiful fish! I have no clue why someone would want to put a blade on those stripes.
