How far south?

Featured Replies

What are some of the southernmost waters you can catch smallies in?(on the East coast).

We have a few fish here in Florida that are similar like the Suwannee bass but that's about it.

There are smallmouth in Northern Georgia in Lake Blue Ridge.  That is as far south as I have heard of them.

The Suwannee are a separate species ,I was just saying they have similarities.Mostly their shape. The colors are pretty different though.

They are both pretty good fighters for their size.

I was just wondering how far north I would have to travel to catch a true smallmouth again, lol.

Florence, Alabama.

The Tennessee River below Wilson Dam.

Technically, Pickwick Lake.

We have smallies in several Central Texas reservoirs.  (not as big as up north but up to almost 7lbs)

The Great Lakes region produces huge numbers and some nice fish,

but 7 lbs is very rare. I knew you had smallmouth, but never

asked about size. 5lb+ are fine fish anywhere and 7lbs is a trophy!

I just assumed that the big ones were all north.

My PB is 5/1 at Belton... lake record is mid 6's.  I believe the Stillhouse record is high/middle 6 lbs.

We've got some great smallie fishing at Tim's Ford in southern Tennessee.  I realize they can be found even further south but that is the southern most place where I personally have had good success.

RW is right. Florence, Al is the farthest south that I've heard of (rumor has it that a few are in the coosa river but I won't be sold until I find one) . But they are some Awesome fish. I fished a collegiate tournament at Lake Wilson last year and had the pleasure of catching my first smallmouth. One of the other teams caught a 5 pounder and I watched another team catch a 4. If you get a chance you should visit Florence. Great town , excellent fishing.

I've seen Monster smallmouth come from tims ford lake. This is the best time of the year for them there also.

I've seen a 5+lbr come out of Lake Monticello here in SC and there are a few weighed in from Murray a couple times a year.

And I think 1 or 2 years ago they pulled one out of Santee Cooper :o
