i'm may be looking into getting a small mouth set up, any suggestions?

Smallmouth don't require any special equipment.

Just need the knowledge as to your location,ie.What are you fishing?Lakes,ponds,streams,cricks,etc.$100 will get you an ok? rod/reel,then add in line,tackle and assorted gear,time to talk to the bait monkey 8-)

Keep an eye on Bass Pro and Cabela's for "combo" deals.

For example, right now, Cabela's has a deal on a Shimano Sedona/Cabela's Tourney Trail Spinning Combo for $65 (reg $90). Either of the ML setups would probably work nice for smallies... if your looking for a spinning rig.

My setup isnt cheap, but its not expensive. I have a shimano sustain 2500 mated on a s 7' M Fast Shimano compre. The compre is 100$, but you can mate a sahara/symetre/saros on it! You would have an amazing setup!

M or ML spinning rig. Until this year my main smallie rig was a 15 year old Bass Pro Micro lite ML 6'6" and Pro Qualifier reel. Those rods are incredible for the money...I think they are like 50 bucks and you can get a nice reel of almost any manufacture for another 50 so there is the 100 buck mark and you'll be happy as heck.

If you already have a spinning rig that is similar, you are ready to go!

I agree with RW. Nothing special is required. Just stay on the ML to Medium action side of the bass spectrum. You'll be using 6 - 8 pound test line with smaller baits - usually - than for largemouths.

I would recommend a long rod of about 7' however. Just gives you better control over skyrocketing smallies!

Medium Berkley Lightning Rod - Spinning - $35

Pflueger President reel - $60? (it was a gift)

St Croix Triumph 6'6" ML ($70, go to Dick's with a coupon, get it for $60), same blank as the Premier, a lot of river smallie guys swear by them.

Abu Garcia Cardinal 300 series ($40)

A nice workable combo for right around that $100 mark.

6'6" medium power fast action Shimano Convergence/ sedona 2500 reel. It's last year's sedona model, but I got the combo for 45. Spooled up with 10lb braid and using a 6lb yo-zuri hybrid leader, the whole deal comes out to less than 100.

If I had to build a setup from scratch...I'd try to find a shimano reel in the 1500 or 2500 sizes, a sonora or sedona, and a Convergence if you can find one (great rod for the money), or a Clarus. I hear good things about the Triumph, too.

IMO, braid with a leader is the way to go in terms of line.

I will second (or third) the St Croix Triumph. Or you can get a left over from last year Premier for around the same price (around $65-75)

I would pair that with the an Okuma Stratus reel from Dick's for around $30-35 on sale or with coupon.

Mitchelle 308xge paired with a bass pro, cabelas, or gander mountain rod. Or you could always try ebay. :-X

A pflueger trion and a st croix triumph is a good combo too.
