I'm hitting Brookville lake in eastern Indiana the 1st week in October

deep lake pretty clear not sure what the water temps will be they may be shallow feeding b4 the water temp drops. I don't fish a jerkbait much but could this be a possiblility. The lake has an abundance of shad not sure what kind 1-3 inches in length. If they are deep (my preference) I have the tools and hopefully the know how but shallow for smallies is new for me. I am open to suggestions. Been off the fishin scene for a few months Big C this is my first major trip hoping to not smell skunk  

October is a bit up the road and water temps will be different.Whats working now might not be when October rolls around,you know this already I'm sure.

Whats working for us now in 5-20 ft. of water,nose hooked 3-4 inch senko type baits,spider jigs w/hula grubs,dropshots,DT 10s,1/4 oz. shakey heads,hopefully one of those puppies will work,G/L.

I would want to give the X-Rap (XR8) and LC Pointer 100

a workout. Jerkbaits are hot in the fall. In low light, topwater

might be the ticket (Zara Spook, LC Sammy and Chug Bug).

If there is a little breeze, 1/4 oz Cavitron Buzzbait is another

suggestion.

Thanks to both of you for the input. Lipped you are right hopefully the water will cool down a little by then. I really wish they were in deep water don't get me wrong I like catching smallmouth anywhere. But I really like the slow serious concentration of a jig droping off ledges as well as dropping a buddy down a bank watching that line. My wife goes with me sometimes and says Joe if you had paid as much attention in school as you do fishing that jig you would have been the smartest kid in the class instead oh well we won't go there . again thanks maybe as we get closer lipped you wouldn't mind sharing the water temps or any thing else. I am really fired up for this trip...

October + SM Bass = hard jerkbaits!   For that matter, the largemouths like 'em too!

Water is cooling down rather quickly(N.E.),2-4 degrees per week(surface temps).Same baits are still producing,will add that a 5 in. lizards on dropshots are getting wet too.A friend also hooked a beauty on the same set up with a wooly-beaver-brush-hawg creature thingy(forgot name) :.Will ask again,he carries 90 gazillion baits with him!

Do listen to these other guys,they have lots more experience than I about smallies.I'm going to have to bite the bullet myself on a couple of those Lucky Crafts.

edit:  And, I'm heading back to that pond in about a half hour.  Cloudy, breezy, with a chance of showers.  Going to resume the hunt where we left off at the north end of the pond.

go with roadwarrior. i throw the rapala xrap till it hurts my arm. for the cloudy days i throw the glass ghost(GGH) and on partly or sunny days i throw the olive green or silver(OG,S). but for any weeds or grass id put out a super fluke weightless weedless in albino. oh yeah he mentioned the sammy. its a great one too, but i prefer the LC gunfish in any of their shad colors or ghost colors with a feathered tail.
