Help Choosing Rod

Featured Replies

hey whats up everyone. i just purchased a Quantum Energy PT baitcast reel on here and need a rod for it. the gearing is 5:0.1. most of the fishing i do is from the bank into canals and lakes. some places are pretty open and every now and again i get into some tight spots. also i might want to take this to the florida keys as well. not looking for anything too crazy expensive. just looking for advice in what to choose. thanks

5:1 is a low ratio and makes a good deep cranking reel. The Lamiglas SR705 is a good match for moving baits. Not the best choice if you'll fish jigs or plastics though.

That`s a very tought question.Bass fishing requires quite a few rods, and you also didn`t say what type of baits you are going to throw. You also mention you get into some tight spots,it`s a lot to ask out of one rod. You also did not say what you think expensive is.. all that being said... You really can`t go wrong with a St Croix Avid Series. I have 4 of them, and they are tough to beat. Also the Shimano Crucials are very good also. I have 2 of the Crucial Spinning, and I am happy.

I wouldn't use a 5:1 for anything other than crankbaits. I like my Skeet Reese crankbait rod but the Quantum reel would probably pair up well with a KVD tour crankbait rod!

i will probably use it for senkos and different types of worms. ideally i dont want to spend more than a $100-$150. trying not to break the bank as i want to get one more reel which i havent decided on yet either lol

Oscar, I live in South Florida also and use a 5.0:1 reel for my heavier soft swimbait rod (Big-ez). I like having to "burn" the reel a little bit with this technique. I think the stronger gear ratio also helps a little with fatigue as you are pulling fairly heavy baits through heavy slop.

I have my 5.0 reel attached to a 7'6" MH veritas, and this setup has been phenomenal for me. The Veritas is only $100 so it falls in your price range. I use 6.3 (worms, hardbaits) and 7.0 (frogs, flipping) ratios for virtually every other fishing I do.

The 5.0 is also a good ratio for deep cranks and heavy spinnerbaits...although I don't do much of either, fishing mostly shallow, weedy lakes.

i was thinking about getting a 6.3 for my next reel... i am thinking of maybe a revo series reel or another curado. i have a E7 curado already. i am going to take a look at that rod you mentioned.

Try the Field & Stream Tec Spec rods on sale at Dick's for $50 and with a online coupon for an additional $10 off the rod can be had for $40. They have a crankbait rod in the lineup and a couple other technique specific rods as well. You should also check out the Cabelas Prodigy line of rods which were on sale for $70. The Prodigy lineup has a 7' MH/MF rod that works great as a crankbait rod. I have one paired with a Prodigy reel and I think the length will work well for you with the reel you want to pair with the rod.
