Help With Fish Weight

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to the Bass fishing and the first day I went fishing for Bass in my neighborhood pond two weeks ago I caught this beauty! (see attached photo I think beginners luck blessed me), but i didn't have any scale or measuring tape, using your experience can you know aprox the weight of the fish? I released and will try to catch it another day now that y tackle box is more complete :).

This day i got 6 nice bass on topwater and 2 or 3 nice bluegill in 1 hour fishing at 11 AM.

Cheers

It's hard to tell because of the angle but I'm guessing somewhere around 4-5 pounds. It's a very nice fish and bigger than lots of people catch after years of fishing for bass! Congrats!

I'd say a good 4 pounder and judging from the look on, I'm assuming your son's face, a very momorable day!

If you're in a situation where you don't have a scale or measuring tape, take a piece of fishing line off your rod and use that to measure length and girth. Bring it home and measure the line and you can use the fish calculator in the "Tools" menu above or Length x Length x Girth/1200 to get an approximate weight.

Nice catch my friend. ;)

Id have to agree with the 4 to 5lb range it is tuff to judge by pictures some times iv got pics of bass on the scale with it in plain view its 7lbs but it looks like a 3lber cuz of the angle but tthen the same fish diff pic it looks like a true 7.

Thank you for your answers!

Nice! i believed it was a 4 4.5 pounder, it was funny because I have a lot of experience fishing carps and saltwater fishing but was my first Bass focused fishing. I'm not from US and have been here for a couple of months only, but i love fishing and all the ponds and lakes in Orlando area just were screaming come on its time to start fishing, so i found this site and did a lot of reading about Bass (sometimes till 4 AM), then i decided to go to BPS and get into some cheap gear to start so i decided to go on the Shakespeare Catch More Bass combo (sorry if its an insult for the pros round here) that for 24 bucks given me a tackle box and a nice spinning rod and a not too bad reel and also purchased some others bait, got a Cars rod for my son (hes 3 1/2 years only and so far he only uses the plastic wheel that comes with the combo and hes getting nice casts), and that Saturday we started fishing cranckbaits around the Lilly pads and nothing, then i tried to rig a worm and didn't went good and my son started to get annoyed and i saw some splashes during the time i was fishing i believed they were some kind of sunfish feeding so i decided to go on a cricket floater popper just to catch some and show to my son, in fact in my first cast i got a nice bluegill he got excited screaming "finally we got one fish, we are not that bad fishing".... :D then i casted the popper into the lillypads and was like an explosion 3 or 4 missed in one cast.... then i started catching some small basses, crappies and bluegills and we have a fish identification chart an my son was finding each one it was just fantastic, then we move like 100 ft to another lilipad and on my first cast there, was amazing to see this fish engulfing the popper! it give some fight and was very surprised of the size because the pond is very small, i was so excited that forgot to take more pictures just that with my son, then we released it and went home for lunch.... But the Bass bug is now inside of me..... I cant stop thinking in go fishing.....

Sorry for the misspelling i can have English is not my mother language, I'm Italian....

Cheers

Nice story, Difrano! Welcome to this country and to this forum. I had no problem understanding what you meant. Funny how I can't hear an accent with the written word. LOL.

It's great that your son likes fishing. I'm trying to get my grandsons into it, but where we fish gets hit hard by lots of people. Catching anything is often a major accomplishment. They were all for it at first, but lack of action is turning them off.

Yup, that is a beautiful fish. Took me a long time to catch one that big, and that happened while visiting Florida. Looks like you have a nice place to fish. Never wanted to live in Florida (too hot), but now that I am nearing retirement age, the idea of being able to fish nearly every day year round has me reconsidering. I have relation just north of you. Lots of small lakes. All with nice fish!

BTW, I personally don't know anyone that started with quality gear. My Dad started me with a cane pole with a bit of line attached. I have a feeling it won't be long before you will be looking to upgrade. Hope you have a good paying job.

Difrano, that was one of the best stories I've read here!. I am so glad you had that expeience with your son, that should be or would be the best memory a man could have with his son!

Good luck my Italian (I am as well -although italian-american) friend!
