I was fishing at a reservoir in Lexington today and notice a few bare spots which appeared to be spawn beds. I didn't see any bass on them, but the beds were definitely fanned out just recently. Any of you guys noticing any early spawners? The water temps was certainly warm enough for the spawn season to start there.

I fished in Milton yesterday, but I didn't see anything that indicated any signs of a spawn, but the water temps there were warm as well. I did see some fry in the shallows at the public beach area.

Define "warm." I need to see steady low 60s and a full moon around the corner before I'll see fish locked on beds.

Yesterday and today were the only times I've been out in 2 weeks, so as far as a constant temp, I can't verify that they were in the 60's for a long period of time. Yesterday and today those 2 water systems were in the low 60's in the shallows.

Bass in NY will spawn bout the same time as mass, very similar weather brotha.

Easy guys. I was at a small body of water and saw a few spots that were fanned out and no bass around them. I thought it was a bit early for a spawn, so I wanted to ask a simple question to anyone in the area if they noticed any spawn beds at their lakes.

Those "fan marks," are probably from water fowl. Saw some Canada Geese leaving patches that looked like beds.

If we can get some warm weather, in the upper 70s for a week, then start looking. If you have a shallow pond you can check out, use it as a "prediction" water.

In my favorite pond, small and shallow, the surface temp was about 62 last Sunday. Where I put in, there are some trees that lean out over the pond. It's very easy to lean on one of these and watch the activity in the shallows.

I saw four pair of bass, leisurely cruising into the shallows and back out. Sometimes they hugged the bottom, other times they suspended just below the surface, and cruised there. Other times they just hung out along the edge of a grass patch in maybe twenty inches of water.

Not only did I witness the bass, but they were sharing the territory with some very large bluegills, nearly rubbing shoulders with them. Neither species paid the slightest attention to the other.

I saw no prepared beds, but the fish seemed to be reacting to the spawning urge, even if it's only the pre-spawn ritual. I'll plead ignorance to what they are actually doing, but these are my observations.

When I did start fishing, most of the fish were caught tight to the beach, in as little as a foot of water. While those I observed appeared to be a bit lethargic in their activity, they were definitely in a biting mood.

The reason for this thread:

On Patriots Day (Boston Marathon) I worked and went to the Lexington Res for lunch. I felt the water and it was still pretty cold. I walked along this steep bank section where a lot of bass were basking in the sun next to blue gill right up against the bank in about 1-2 FOW.

The other day when I fished it I saw a few fanned spots in the nothern and northeast sections of the res and the water was in the low 60's. I caught a couple bass in very skinny water and at least 5 more bites that I whiffed on in skinny water as well.

This res isn't very deep and has a tendancy to warm really fast and will let the bass spawn a bit earlier than most bodies of water I frequent.

Not spawning yet but the bass are in the shallows. I caught 2 bass on Saturday both over 2lbs one on a crawdad crank and one on a YUM brushhog! I also saw a few more roaming. the Bass that I caught were very aggresive but I did not see in y beds yet..

Still no sign of beds being prepared, but they are storming the shallows. Caught a ton of 'em today, and every one of them was right against the bank, or shallow rock formations. Caught eight alongside one small dock. Don't know how many I caught total, but it was considerable for four hours of fishing from six to ten this morning.

Went out Monday for the day on Whitehall...shallow weedy...saw some fanned out areas...water temp is back down to a more realistic 63-64 degrees...caught 9 largemouth bass...none near spawning areas...all but three over 2#...So Smallmouth are probably ready now and Largemouth will be ready about the first of June...like JF said look for full moon.

Just came back from Lexington. I spent 2 hours there and saw 5 males guarding beds. Got 1 buck on a jig & grub and enticed one 3 times, but took my jig and moved it.. He was 8' in front of me. Three times I pitched to the bed and let it sit there. Twitched my rod so that the jig moved about an inch, after about 5 tritches he moved it off the bed, never really having a good grip on it to set the hook....LOL...I left him alone after that.

I will be back home and fishing some local spots this weekend. One of the ponds I fish regularly has very easy to locate beds so I will be sure to keep people updated on what I am seeing. We gotta be close
