Toothaches Suck

Recommended Posts

It's 3:15 AM and I cannot sleep. Darn this toothache from keeping me awake. I've tossed enough Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen down my throat to knock out a horse at this point. I've got the clove oil in the bathroom, but man do I hate using that stuff.

Who's got a remedy besides booze, and a pistol, that will actually work?

Dentist will have the answer. Is a toothache or pain from your gums? Gargleing with warm saltwater can help.

Already called to make an appointment. Did the saltwater gargle too. I remember my mother telling me about that.

I haven't had a bad toothache in a long time, but we used to crush like ibuprofen into a powder and place the powder right on the gum of the toothache. Tasted absolutely horrible, but it did help.

Don't recommend this to anyone. It will kill the pain and can also cause a nasty burn from the medication. One time exposure usually does not have terrible side-effects, but the problem is there are retards in this world who figure that if it works once then repeated use must be good. You can cause some serious tissue damage doing this.

You have probably gotten in by now, but ibuprofen is your best bet if it is a tooth with an abcess involved. If it is coming from the gums then you can still use ibuprofen and an over the counter numbing agent like oragel. Other than getting into the dentist to fix it, nothing will take care of it completely.

I feel your pain SF Bass Addict. There's nothing worse than a toothache. Clove oil does the job, but man that stuff is nasty. Plus if you get any on your lip or mouth it burns like crazy.

I had a cracked tooth for probably 8 or 9 years. It never bothered me until a few weeks ago when the crack got bigger and the tooth abcessed. So I went in to have it pulled, no big deal. Well it turned into a big deal. When he was pulling on it with his pliers it broke off. His pliers then smashed into another tooth, breaking about a 1/4 of that one off. He had to cut my gum open to remove the rest of the root and stitch it back up. He wanted to fix the other one right then but I was too mad to sit there any longer. I went back 4 days later and got the other one filled. I hope it lasts because like I said, there's nothing worse than a toothache.

I have never had a toothache, but see them on a daily basis. Everyone says they are the worst pain ever. Clove oil is a soothing medicament, but not long term. Broken teeth are the things I see most. You can usually survive a fracture that doesn't involve the nerve, it is that one in a million that goes to the nerve that will ruin your day.

Had a minor toothache Sunday....now I've got a dentist appoitment for tomorrow and half a wisdom tooth. Took a bite of corn and crunch. It was cracked at my last appointment but I never followed up, now I have too. The good thing is it doesn't hurt anymore but it's cutting my tongue to shreds.

You can go to the pharmacy or store and get some temporary filling material or dental wax to place over the sharp spot until your dental appointment. That will cover it, and you may have to replace it more than once, but it sure beats a cut up tongue.

If it's an abcessed tooth, try this. Get a glass of ice water. Take some in your mouth, and hold it against the aching tooth. I'm not kidding, but it only works on abcessed teeth. Hot/warm water will make it worse.

This is how my dentist explained that it works. The pain is caused by pressure of the abcess on the nerves in the gum at the root tip. Cold water, or anything cold against the gum at that tooth cools the abcess and the fluid which is causing the pressure contracts taking pressure off the nerve. It only works on abcesses. At that point, the nerve in the tooth is dead and not sensitive to cold.

The cold water works instantaneously to relieve the pain. How long it provides relief depends on how much water you hold in your mouth.

You can swallow it without harm, but after a while you'll spit it out and take on another charge of ice water. You won't sleep, but you'll be pain free.
