Crankbait Hooks

Recommended Posts

So I responded to a poat yesterday about cheap tackle. Appearently I jinxed myself in doing so. Went fishing after work and hooked into a monster bass (at least for the pond I was fishing). Went to pull her up to lip her and she shook and straightened my hook out on my crankbait. Needless to say miss big fish swam off. Any advice on stronger treble hooks than the stock VMC hooks that were on my crank?

I replace trebles on virtually all my new cranks/traps. I prefer the Mustad KVD triple grip 2X, putting a #4 on the front and #6 on the back.

Stock rapalas are actually good out of the box, at least they have always been for me. They're just about the only off the shelf lure I won't change the trebles on.

Just curious but were you pulling her to you via the line at the end before you attempting to lip her?

Anyway, what happened to you can happen with just about any treble under the same condition. Sometimes they win. Sorry to hear about that loss.

My crankbait worthy trebles are VMCs, but I also like, Owner's stingers, Gammies, and Mustad's Triple Grips. The KVD's appear to be a variation/derivative of the triple ripple dipples that I haven't tried yet but would like to try.

x2 on the stock rapala's hooks being good, but i thing that the mustads or owners or even gammies are stronger. the only bait i don't ever change the trebles on is my rattle trap. these are some of the best hooks you will find stock on a crank. also try the sureset hooks that rapala puts on some of their lures because the one part that sticks out is thicker and stronger than the rest of the hook.

If my memory is correct: Lucky Craft and Strike King come stock with VMC trebles and Spro comes with Gammie hooks.

Those three manufacturers make up ~90% of my crankbait usage and the stock hooks are certainly strong and sharp enough. I like the triple grips as I think they help keep the fish buttoned up a little better. I don't change the trebles on all my crankbaits as it is a tiresome and expensive venture. But as a datum point: I use red eye shad alot and have many of them both with stock and triple grip hooks. And I do believe my catch rate is improved with the triple grips.

This year I started replacing my crank hooks. I use Owners and Gammy EWG. I use the same size that came with the crank. I haven't lost a fish yet. I mostly fish Bandit cranks and I have noticed a huge difference. Especially those Owners, I will probably just use them from now on, they are super sticky!

I am loving these replacement trebles this year, just wish they were offered in bulk.

A-Jay - I am right there with you. I have not lost a fish on one of these hooks yet!! I have also been able to go up one size larger than normal with these. E.G. instead of a 6 I use a 4, etc.

I replace the treble hooks on all of hard baits with either the Mustad Triple Grip (Black Nickel) or the Gamakatsu Round Bend trebles. Haven't been disappointed with either one.

So, the stock hooks on Lucky Craft, Megabass, Jackall, and Ima are garbage?

Not hardly, say I. If I could get Katsuage hooks for all my baits I'd do it in a blink, no second guessing.

Edit: Check that, Ima switched to Owner ST36 didn't they?

Gammy trebles have the hook eye oriented wrong for 90% of baits. I needs to be perpendicular, since most cranks use a split ring. VMC Vanadium Inlines and Owner ST-36/41 are what I use.

diachii sharpened VMC your talking about as jfrancho pointed out? which is not the same sharpness as stock VMC's on rapala's etc...strength wise vmc are junk compared. i've had many vmc's bend and lost fatties which is the exact reason why i initially started upgrading all my crank trebs, not to mention breaking some vmc's.

besides i don't throw LC, jackall's or any higher end cranks with all the pike in my waters, so i just upgrade cheaper cranks & topwaters...

I wouldn't base my opinion of VMC strictly on what comes n a Rapala box....they aren't the same.

What Johnny said is more along my intent. The Rapala VMC hooks aren't the basis of comparison. Even the 9650 and 9651 are better than they are.

I used to be that way about pike in waters, but got tired of getting smoked from the back of the boat. I've donated one Megabass to the fishing gods in the past five years from a bite off, and I fish waters with a lot of pike and muskies. (I caught a 44" fish this spring on a Pointer 128, my partner boated a slob of a pike that was easily 15lbs on a Vision110)

I replace hooks, too, but not on everything. I don't worry about any of the JDM baits, and I don't typically worry about Rapala baits with the exception of the sure set. I've been using Owner ST36, the KVD Elite TG, Gamakatsu 2x Black Nickle, VMC 9650 and 9651, and Daiichi Death Traps. Thus far, the Daiichi is what I like the most. I can go up to a size two from a size four with no adverse effects. I'll use any of the hooks I listed in a pinch, they're all better than most stock hooks on common baits.

I change almost all of my cranks and jerks to those hooks, they've been good to me! :D

Granted quality hooks all differ and there are some better than others no doubt about it; But, honestly I can say there is no bass that has came close to straighten out a stock hook on any of my cranks. I have caught 40+# flatheads off these hooks and they come out fine. Only big flatheads and big stripers have straighten my hooks and I still catch large ones as long as I am not greedy and watch my drag.

I guess freeing from undwater boulders also reverses that bend a bit as well.

I will however try and change a few cranks and check for difference on hookups.

the rapala vmc stock hooks i've bent and broke several times on smallies wadefishin in the river. i don't recall having largies bend any though...

over all i've had excellent results with the gammy ewg trebs. i can get those off the shelf here where as the owners i'd have to order. but my hook up ratio/landed fish has significantly improved upgrading trebs on my cranks.

the proofs in the pudding for me cuz it makes that clear of a difference. sometime i'll have to break down and order some owners to see the comparison between the 2...
