Looks Like Okeechobees Headed For Another Record Low.

Recommended Posts

10.09 as of this morning and dropping fast. In the long run it will be better for the lake but it sure puts pressure on the local economy, better low than high in my book.

Rainy days are coming and one tropical depression floating over in the summer will fix it.

We need some rain badly. It is going take a lot of rain to add 4' to the lake. Hopefully the ACE and the SFWMD will learn to not release so much water in the future.

I agree 100% I recently bought a boat and cant wait to go to Lake O but with minimal experience I dont want to take any chances.....

Thats probably a smart move.

Man, 10'? Thats scary low. Like mentioned though, one good tropical system can dump the water right back into it. It's not a matter of if we'll get one, but when.

I still believe that letting nearly 2' of water out of the Lake between October and January, at the end of the rainy season and beginning of the dry season was a bad mistake. I can see taking the Lake down from 14 to 12 at the beginning of the rainy season (which weirdly enough they didn't do last year). Obviously, no one could forsee the magnitude of the drought so I'm not saying this in hindsight. I know the arguments for drawdowns and how it benefits the Lake, but this could well be a very serious mistake. What if there is isn't a tropical depression or rainy season-some years there isn't. 12' right now would look a lot better.

It has me nervous about our 2 day tourney coming up. At least I have 2 days to pre-fish and put around. I have a feeling the spots we hit a couple months ago are high and dry.

I fished out of Clewiston on the 2nd... it was very low... all we could do was fish the canal and a couple of the inlets.. fishing was still good.. but didn't even bother going into the main part of the lake, the guide said it was WAYYYY too low to go out there due to it being at 10 ft...

I'll get a look at it Thursday, IF the ramp at Scott Driver allows.

It appears the tournament is still on. So we will see.

I have a hunch that sugarcane is more profitable than angling :)

The sod farmers must love these mandatory water restrictions...my green lawn is looking like straw..great for business.

There is really something wrong with the decision makers at the ACE and SFWMD. Hopefully this drought will bring some changes to the powers that be..

The Corps of Engineers is who let the water out of the Lake from October thru January. They have absolute control of the water level of the Lake. Somebody with no responsibilty or accountability to anyone made that decison and no amount of hearings etc. is going to change it. Once it leaves the Lake it falls under SFWMD.

Scott Driver and OkeeTanti ramps on the north end are now unusable.

Theres a make shift ramp about 5 miles up the dirt road adjacent to the Kissimee Rivers east side. They put it in the last time the water went down, a 4x4 is highly recommended.

We have had some pretty nasty rains in the last few days. Hopefully some of it will head your way. Anything falling south of I-4 and east of US 27 should be going south.

I know I've had a bunch of rain the last few days down here in Broward. Though it seems that water is getting pulled out of the lakes down here as quick as it's going in.

Wheres one of those tropical systems when you actually need one....

Does anyone know if Indian Praire Canal is usable?

Yes the canals usable, but you'll catch hell getting to the lake, you have to ease through the end.

The ramp may be a little tough to use, but as steep as it is you can probably get in and out.

If your just looking to fish a canal go to the J&S canals, they get loaded with fish during low water.

10.20 and rising. Good to see.

Lake Okeechobee Water Levels

The pit lakes down here have come way up in the last week or so. The one I live on was down several feet, now it's actually just over the normal pool.

Looks the rainy season is here. Hopefully the lake didn't lose much vegetation during the low water. The last time the lake was this low, it helped the fishing the following years. Hopefully the lake will be better than ever going forward. Despite this brutal heat, I am dying to get back to the lake. Been too busy with work.

One of my buddies fished a club tourney last weekend out of Clewiston. Most of the guys are fishing the lake channel, but he and his partner raised the big motor and trolled through the 1-2' water to reach the grass. He landed a 5 and his partner landed a 8.4 and won the tourney. 22 lb bag. The guys fishing the channel did poorly.

I haven't been fishing much lately because of work, sorry for the second hand report(he was ok with me passing it along).
