hula grubs

Featured Replies

has anyone fished with a hula grub?  what is the best way to fish these?  i had one on a standup jig but since the bottom was very rocky i kept getting snags in between the rocks.  what other ways can this be fished so that it catches fish? :-[

Standard T-rig, weedless. The less weight, the better, 1/16 - 1/8 oz,

unpegged; Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook and Hybrid Ultra

Soft #6.

thanks roadwarrior, i have a baitcaster that has a lure weight range of 3/8oz - 1oz.  should i use a 3/8 weight compared to the 1/8 oz?

these can be fished with a baitcaster right?

i always use YO-ZURI Hybrid line, so ive got that part covered!!  8-)

Sure, you can use any size weight. I was just describing how I

fish Hula Grubs.

Those are just guidelines. You can cast 1/16 lures with a baitcaster - with the hook and grub it'll be more than that so you're fine. Set one up and throw it in your backyard to get a feel for it.

I fish hula grubs on deeper structure with at least a 1/4 ounce jig. If I'm using heavier line or fishing in deep water I won't hesitate to go 1/2 ounce of heavier. In really nasty rocks or wood cover, I go with a weedless jighead.

The hula is one of the very finest baits for deep smallies and largies.

i have had success with the Yamamoto double-tail hula grub.

weightless, slow fall

and texas rigged unpegged 1/8oz

slow crawled on bottom, lift and let fall, or swimming it.

it was my go-to most of last year.

I fish them on a 3/8th oz weedless jig head and have had alot of success this way.

Hula grubs are one of my primary lures

since i have the hula grubs already, and soon to have the hooks, would someone mind posting a picture on how the weightless t-rigged hula grub will look once set up?

The hula grub is effective with both lightweight and heavier jigheads. I prefer to use the heaviest jighead I can get away with, usually will use 1/4 - 1/2 oz, however there have been times when I've done well with 3/4 oz jigs. Even with a heavier jighead this bait will fall a little slower than a similiar weighted jig n' craw combo because they kicking legs on the Hula tend to slow the fall. I highly reccomend this bait to those who have a hard time fishing a regular skirted jigs because the fish tend to hold this bait longer aiding strike detection. This is definetely a 5 star lure, especially for clear water.

The Hula grub was one of my favorite plastics to demonstrate in the tanks while we were doing sport shows all winter long. I have fished the hula Grub since yamamoto introduced it many years ago. This is just something I am throwing at you- The best way I have ever rigged it was on a ShakE2 Jig Head. The spike went right into the head and the hook into the body by the tail section. You can hop it on rocks-/into weeds, brush ect and its totally weedless. Stands up every time and also rolls upward. It can be put on the 3/16 but mu favorite is the 3/8 head .*** will know this technique-Little help here buddy-can you get a pic n here?? If not I will post one on Monday- Give them a try . The hula Grub was the best kept secret here in the North East for years.

Hmm..,.

Might be the best smallmouth lure ever invented,

but in still water, I prefer the Fat Ika.
