Swim jig

Featured Replies

Let me start by saying that I consider myself an above average bass fisherman, been doing it most of my life, not about to join the Elite series, but am usually up on the current trends.

With that said I am curious for any info that you guys can give me about the "swim jig" technique? I really am just looking for info on how you retrieve it. Do you literally throw it out, and bring it in? Just seems to go against everything that I know about jig fishing.

Again, I consider myself a good fisherman, and it is killing me that their is a technique out there that I know NOTHING about, which makes me want to learn it and add it to my arsenal, so any info that you guys can provide would be appreciated!

I'd go buy me 1/4 oz. bitsy bug jig black and blue in the mornings and evenings or on cloudy days.  Or on cloudy or sunny days I'd use a pumpkin chart. color in a grassy flat area of the lake you'll be fishing. I like to use pork rinds on the back because its a fact that real pork gives the jig more bouancy (if I spelled that wrong I'm srry). Cast the jig out across the flat and retrieve it by popping the jig write underneath the top of the water about 3 inches or so and keep working the flats in this way and you'll know very soon if the fish are biting the bait or not.  Sometimes you can be swimming the bait and just stop it on the way back and the fish will stike the bait on the fall so be ready for that also. I'd use a chart. pork rind on the pumpkin seed jig and a black and blue pork rind on the black and blue jig. ;) good luck and I did the best I could to answer your question correctly

As I read about the Swim Jig technique this past winter I decided to make this the one method that I would really fish hard this season to see if I could duplicate the success that so many others have written about. Well, I can honestly tell you that I am Very glad I did. This bait has been UNREAL for me.

Despite being a Jig at heart - my success with it has come when it is fished more like a spinnerbait or even a crankbait, especially in and around moderate cover. It has also been a very effective search bait as well. This spring I fished several lakes I had never been on, so casting into unseen snags is fairly possible - the bait usually comes right through while at the same time really putting a hurting on both LMB and SMB as well as walleye and pike (the pike bite the bait off quite a bit.) I believe that some of the success of this bait revolves around the baits versatility. A 1/4 ounce swim jig can effectively be fished from 1-2 ft down to 10-12 feet. And a 3/8 ounce model can go a bit deeper. The clearer the water the better and the trailer you chose plays a big part in how the bait fishes. I have had the most success with a 4" Berkley power grub. GYCB makes a nice grub but it's pretty soft and does not hold up as well. A 3-4 inch swim bait or shad style body also makes a nice trailer and really slows the baits rate of fall, nice in the early season.

I would encourage you to pick up a few. I have had success with colors that match the color of the bottom - pumpkins, greens, and browns.

Good Luck

Yep just throw it around cover grass especially and reel it in put whatever your favorite trailer is on it that has some action ie. paca craw, zoom ultravibe, grub etc. It is unreal some of the hits you get on this thing so hold on.

I have had very good luck with swim baits so far this year.  Just throw it out and retrieve it like a spinner bait or anything else you want to try.  I have used swim jigs from KVD, Outkast, etc... they have all worked.   So far my favorite trailers have been the single tail grubs from Kinmai and Yamamoto.

Later, ;)

great jig choice, and at $1.69 at wally world you can't beat them. i would use a paca chunk in okeechoebe craw as my trailer though. that is a deadly combo when you swim it through the pads.
