Re-Wiring A Tilt Trailer

Featured Replies

I'm considering re-wiring my trailer, but it's a tilt trailer and I have a couple questions. My current wiring runs inside the frame, and I was wondering if I'd be better off running the new wiring on the outside of frame? I thought about encasing the wire inside some sort of wire protection(plastic conduit, etc), but how would I deal with the tilt aspect of the trailer? I'd like to keep the tilt aspect operational. Thanks.

id use your old wire to pull the new wire through the trailer.

I understand that, but I think having the wire inside the "tilt trailer" frame again is just asking for more wiring trouble in the future. I'm still trying to figure out my current wiring issue(other thread).

can you feed a piece of garden hose down to that point of the trailer?

No. The size of the holes in the frame for the wiring is about 1/2". I'd like to encase the wiring in something on the outside of frame, but I don't know how to do that since it's a tilt trailer.

If you insist on running it on the outside, pick up some "sealtite"(brand name) to run the wires thru, at Home Depot. It's used for outdoor wiring applications. Attach it to the frame with galvanized "mini's" They also have different types of galvanized connectors. You can mount outdoor handy boxes to the frame and make your terminations. May be a little bulky, but you will accomplish your goal.

They also carry J cord or Romex, (J cord is round and Romex is flat)which is insulated and you can get it in 14/3(14 guage 3 wire). That would fit thru the holes you have in the trailer now. Run one length down each side of the trailer and tie them in somewhere near the hitch.

Outside would be better why? Just run it through using the old wires, or buy a 25' wire snake for $10 to fish it through. If you solder and heat shrink it right, it should last you.

I'm thinking that the wire will eventually get frayed or damaged due to the tilt action of the trailer. That may be the cause of my current problem. But I guess if that does happen, I'll just re-wire again.

It'll get damaged easier on the outside. Where ever you suspect it will chafe, install a grommet or use some plastic cord wrap.
