Rebel Pop-R

Featured Replies

Howdy folks,

My father bought me a Rebel classic critters pack of 4 lures for $10. One is the pop-r which is very lightweight and I can't get it to cast far. So I'm confused. Is it really meant to be cast alone without a sinker? I really need the extra casting distance.

Thanks,

LWD

Use a lighter rod if you have one.

I use a 5'6 light/medium rod. May have to try my micro spin rod.

What size is the Pop r, and what size line are you using??

Don't use a sinker. 30# braid IMO is way too heavy for light rod. I'd go with 10-, 15# max, I use 6'6 rod it and can cast quite far.

Its the 1/8oz. Pop-R... I've sen the lure kit. That could be awfull hard to thro on 30# braid of any sort....

I usually have a lure hang from my rod about 6-8" before I cast, with Pop R's and other topwater I find that if I let it hang down about 12", I can get a longer cast. Give that a try.

What are the rods specs?

Line test?

Bait weight?

I agree that the line may be way too heavy for the bait so check the rod's specs and stay within them.

Then, let us know if you can cast further. ;)

I would say you have too heavy a line weight. I LOVE the PopR! My setup is a 6'6-7 St.Croix with 12lb Pline. Or, a heavy action spinning rod with 8-10lb mono. Do NOT use flouro for topwater as the line sinks and will kill the action of the lure.

It's a topwater. I won't use a weight.

1/8 oz for me is ultralight territory; with 4 lb mono or 2/10 lb braid.

30# braid IMO is way too heavy for light rod.

Beat me to it. I would say that this is your problem good sir.

The 3" Pop R weighs 1/8 oz in that kit? Doesn't seem right, I would guess more like 3/8 - 1/2 oz, the 2 1/2" one weighs 1/4 oz..

EDIT: I just looked up the kit and you guys are right, it's the 2" teeny Pop R that is included in that kit and weighs 1/8 oz. I had looked at post #5 and LWD said it was a 3" Pop R which threw me off a bit.

My apologies for the confusion.

It casts much further with 4lb mono. My fault I thought it was the 3" but it's the teeny 2".

If your afraid to use light line than maybe Berkley Nanofil would be a good choice. You can get 10 pound line with a very small diameter and would be able to cast that thing further.

You guys have it all wrong. Get a 1/4 oz. "casting" sinker and a split ring. Attach the weight to the split ring, then attach that split ring to the front (line-tie) split ring. This works perfect for openings in submergent weeds. Cast past the opening, start your retrieve BEFORE it hits the water, and retrieve fast, then kill it in the opening. The trick is finding out how long you have to let it sit on the bottom before you start hopping it back to you. Some days they will nail it on the fall, but most times after i let it sit for a minute or two. Although this tactic works best for the 3/8 oz. size, i have tried it with...sorry, but i told you too much already...and sometimes i'm just a jerk.
