Depends...In Florida even a mud puddle holds bass. I was fishing around Orlando and saw a couple of rentetion areas of a road. I mean these were strickly run off/drainage areas for the road. Pulled over a slayed bass up to 4#'s. I would give them a shot.

I didn't think much of this concept either 2 years ago until I talked to a city worker who mentioned "big bass" in some of the retention ponds by a mall in my area. I gave it a shot one day and I have been hitting them ever since. Fishing pressure is minimal and they hit anything. The water usually looks like ice tea and at times the trash and scum in the summer gets thick, BUT the bass are big, dark, and mean. I find it to be a great place to practice new techniques and have fun. You can't go wrong throwing a Senko during the day, or buzzbait/topwater in the mornings/evenings.

Most of the time when i fish is in stocked neighboor hood retention ponds. I pulled out a 7lber and got a pic but had a 9lber on the shore and it snapped the line before i got a picture. So they are worth a shot, in my neighborhood there are like 9 different ponds, the lakes are not pressured as much as some rivers and lakes.

I fish them cause as someone said you never know unless you put a line in the water.

In Florida for sure. I have caught good sized bass in the turnpike retention ponds, also most schools have a retention pond, they can be good too.

Definitely NOT a waste of time. I and, I'm sure, countless anglers have caught some excellent bass from man-made ponds.

If i am relaxing by throwing a lure into a puddle for 10 minutes,it is not a waste of time. Sometimes it may seem like a waste of time. But sitting on your arse instead is the real waste of time. One never know what they may pull out of a small hotel pond filled with ducks, or a little retention pond that you cast from one shore to the other. You would be surprised. You may catch nothing, isnt that why they call it fishing?
