Braid And Tape

Featured Replies

OK, I've been using braid extensively for almost a decade, and I've always used mono backing. I've known about the tape trick, but I've never seen anyone actually do it, so here's what I just realized I really don't know...when you spool braid using tape, are you taping over the spool and then tying off over top of the tape, or are you taping the braid down to the spool and then winding on? I always assumed the latter, but a recent description got me to wondering.

People tape the spool first because they don't want the line to roll around.

If you are using mono to fill the lower portion of the spool so you don't have to waste expensive line, then your doing it correctly. Just tape it after you double-Uni or Albright.

Taping also prevent further backlash problem too. Just take your heaviest lure and cast it out in wind direction and pull out an extra 10-15feet and tape.

I always use tape and braid, you can attach the line either way. Line on spool, tape over and crank it up, or tape on spool and tie a knot, then wind it on. Either way I use about 2" and 1/4 to 1/2 " wide is how I cut it, I use masking tape others use electrical which I'm sure works fine too. My preference is no tie, just tape, but when I do tie i use just 2 overhand knots, never a slippage.

I never use backing, straight braid, it costs a little more only the first time.

I prefer smaller reels and fill them entirely with PE line. I use a discarded PE line as filler if more is needed. I tie directly to the bare spool using a 4 wrap uni knot and tape over the line using a water resistant, cloth based medical tape. I tape the entire circumference of the reel, knot to knot. Lay the line on tightly.
