Looking For Your Jig Weedgaurd Input

Featured Replies

Guys, I'm looking for some opinions on 1/8-5/32 weedgaurds. If you are looking for a jig in weights 5/8 and up which would you prefer and why?

Here is the reason for the question and my thoughts to it.

I have modified a Brush jig mold and a Football mold and bumped it up to a 5/32. In testing I have found this seems even more weedless in these heavier weights. No loss in hookups. If you were looking to buy a jig in these bigger sizes would you want the option of both sizes or just trim out some of the 5/32? There is approx 7 strands different. I believe trimming is the better way to go since its more multi-role.

I trim out, just based on "feel." Works for me.

I actually prefer a double wire guard for weedless, but I am in the minority when it comes to that opinion.

On a jig?

You may be in the minority with that opinion, but you are not alone. I prefer no "weed guard" and hook exposed whenever cover allows and lightly tex-posed when that is possible. The only skirted bass jig with weed guard I fish is a Hairy Bug and it has a V-shaped light wire guard.

Ahhh, thanks for the bird dog on a jig with that type of guard. Nice finesse jig, but totally inappropriate for much of my type of fishing.

I think it would be a better option to let every person trim it as they see fit! I prefer my jigs with uncut skirts and weed guards, and I do it all myself!

Mike, I agree with you that trimming allows for more flexibility and that would be my preference.
