Crankbaits, snap or no snap??????????

Featured Replies

No snaps here either, for all the good reasons mentioned above.

The reason I use snaps has nothing to do with making lure changes easier - - and I can retie and check my line anytime I want whether I have a snap or not.......I use them because they improve the lure action - more than split rings or loop knots.  I have to agree with Whittler - - guys like him, Brian's Bees, Tom Seward, spend hundreds of hours watching baits in swimming pools to figure out what works best, so when they talk, I listen.   ;)

In my feeble little mind, it would seem that a good quality snap would provide the least restrictive point of contact for the line-tie to swing against.

I tried using snaps a couple of months ago and gave up on them.  They are a pain in the butt to open and close.  I can tie a rapala loop knot faster than I can fiddle with a snap.  this is an excellent knot that will not fail if tied properly and drag is appropriately set.  I genereally take the split ring off and tie directly to the lure.  If not it's because I'm lazy and havent' gotten around to it yet.

I use duolock snaps most of the time? It makes it easier to change baits and I cannot tie any knot besides a palomar. The exception to the rule are suspending jerkbaits in spring and fall (that snap will cause the bait to nose down) and if I find a crank that is really working when I re-tie I will eliminate the snap. Last year I did loose a crank to a snap that opened on a cast, it was the first one ever for me in 20+ years of fishing.

I use snaps because it is easy to change lures quickly. Also, I use them because I throw a lot of wiggle warts and they are already on them.
