I recently picked up a Daiwa shock ultralight at Academy (clearance special for $12). This combo is for my son. Can you recommend me a good line? The reel is a 1000 series. The smallest reel I've owned before was a 2500 series. I had 10lb power pro on that and it did great, just alittle difficult to cast the lighter lures. He likes to fish for bluegill, and the occasional bass. In the ponds we fish a 3 or 4lb bass is good, most are about a pound.

I was thinking about 4 or 6lb Yo-Zuri as i hear good things about it on this board. Thoughts? Thanks!

For UL panfishing, it's hard to beat the oldest standby - Trilene XL (I like the green). On a crappie forum recently, I've been hearing some good things about Vicious Panfish line though. I may give that a whirl at some point. But I've been using XL for over 30 years, so it's going to be hard to switch for me!

6lb yo-zuri will do the trick just fine!

4lb Yo-Zuri Ultrasoft is what I use on my ultralight setup.

4# ultra soft is a good choice will give him a nice casting distance

6lb yozuri will be a handful on that small spool, i would go with 4lb xl or clear blue stren.

4 or 6lb trilene xl

My UL line of choice has been MagnaThin for years. 6lb Magnathin is 4lb Stren Diameter or close.

If you can find it DAM tectan line is some of the best ultra light line you can get. It may be hard to find but it is well worth it if you can find it. All of the other lines will work fine though.

Trilene 4lb would be best probably. If you go yo zuri then definitely use 4lb. I use 4lb on my medium light and it is perfect. Have even caught several muskies with it and it held up fine.

PowerPro can be had in 5# & 8#. I have 8# PP on a Stradic 1000 and even smaller Pflueger Micro President. I get pretty good distance with say a little Strike King Bitsy Minnow.

Too Nanofil works great as far as line management goes and distance of light presentations I have 6# on the spare spools of mentioned reels.

Havent tried 4# XL but have 6# and only use it now for backing.

You say for occasional bass so if like 75% gills and 25% bass the Nanofil I think would be a very good choice.

Another vote for Trilene XL. I mostly use 4 lb., but on occasion, I'll go to 2 lb.

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I'll check all these lines out next time I do some shopping (combo is going back for Christmas so I have some time).

Anyone else have any experience with the really small braids? I thought I read on here somewhere that these break easily? If not, it definitely seems like a good choice to look into.

I would go reliable, cheap, and simple. You'll be picking out snarls, loops, and tangles. Possibly respooling a few times before he gets it down. Trilene XL fits that bill.

As with most of the time, Franco is right on. XL is great line, especially for the price. Mono is good on ultralights, because the stretch gives you some extra cushion with the usually tiny hooks. XL is like a 30-06; it may not be the best, but it does everything well, it's dependable, it's cheap, and you can find it anywhere that sells line.

Seaguar Senshi 4-6 lb great line low stretch no memory super strong and abrasion resistant

My first vote is 4 lb Yozuri. It isn't quite as soft as Trilene XL but it's strong!!! My second vote is Trilene XL.
