I was given a 7 foot medium heavy fast action st croix rod. What woul this rod be good for. Any techniques?

Many techniques will work well with this rod.

Personally I wouldn't use a mh spinning rod for bass fishing............except if I needed a rod to handle heavier lure weights or some really thick slop. I don't use anything heavier than a med 8/17 rod, but I mostly throw moving baits.

Whether that particular rod is conducive for jigs, I don't know, I'd use it for pretty much everything. I do believe in a jig specific rod, especially deep water jigging, I've come many a time with a sore back from using rod not designed for jigs, they cast well too.

Trade material. I like St Croix rods, but there MH spinning rods are broomsticks, I don't fish with "big" spinning tackle.

It would be very good for tubes and shaky heads 3/8 oz or heavier. Also for bigger Senkos. That rod would see plenty of action in the grass here on the Potomac.

You can work Texas Rig Plastic, Jigs, Wacky rigs(French Fry, Senko), Medium size Crankbaits, Topwater, Jerkbait, ect. ect.

I have a 7' MH Tech Spec spinning rod that is classified as a rig and jig rod. I have used the rod for t-rigged senkos both weighted and unweighted. I've also used it as a jig rod and as a topwater rod for poppers and it has handled all those duties very well.

All of the above plus spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, other large single hook baits.

I also have a 7' MH-F spinning rod. I have a 035-size Pflueger Surpreme reel with 12lb test on it. I don't fish it much - but it has come in handy a couple of times when it was VERY windy and I didn't want to fight with a BC rig to toss spinnerbaits into the wind. It also comes in handy when it's very cold and I start losing dexterity to use a BC reel. Also, spinning rigs have bigger guides and no line guide on the reel - both make the rig a bit more usable in icing conditions. It IS a niche rod for me though....

I have a 6'6" MH spinning setup that I use for jigs, t-rigs, and spinnerbaits...mostly at night. I use a baitcaster for spinnerbaits and heavier jigs during the day, but I backlash the crap out of them in the dark.

X2 - I'll keep fishing a BC rig through dusk and into full dark. But if I start fishing and it's already dark, I tend to favor spinning as well.
