Help!!! Need Advice On Braid-Flouro Leader Knots

Featured Replies

I have been trying to use 20lb power pro and a flourocarbon leader on my shakey head setup. I found a good knot to tie the fouro to the braid that will not break. The problem is my knot to my shakey head is breaking on every hook set. I love seagar invisx so i've been trying 10lb as my leader material. I've tried a palomar knot, clintch knot and a knot Shaw Grigsby said is the best fouro knot ever. My drag is loose as well so i don't know what the problem is.

So... two qustions: What knot do you have the best luck with and should i try a different leader matarial?

You should not be having a problem with those knots, try the double palomar and an improved clinch.

Instead of floro try some maxima ultragreen for your leader material. Problem solved & you will not notice the difference except the pain in your __s will go away.

What knot do you have the best luck with

Monofilaments = Trilene

PE lines = double Palomar

joining monofilament leaders to PE main lines = Alberto aka... modified Albright

The only knot I tie anymore in fluorocarbon is the Pitzen. It's easy, it's efficient, and it's more than effective.

For leader to main line I use an Albright. For terminal tackle I use a palomar 90% of the time. They seem to work well for me. If you are snapping the knot make sure you are wetting your knots before pulling them tight. The heat from pulling unlubricated knots can cause your flouro to weaken somewhat. How are you setting the hook? I reel set mostly on shakey heads. I do lift the rod tip but its a very gentle sweep upward. Works pretty well on light wire hooks in my shaky head jigs.

I'm with Chattahoochee. I had similar problems until I slowed down my knot tying. Go slow and use spit.

Increase the poundage to 20#, sense it is fluorocarbon line and use the palomar.

Love the Alberto knot for the braid to fluoro leader and line to lure i either use the palomar, or clinch knot. Youtube search for derek remitz tying one with a football jig- good video! But always go slow and wet the knot

Something is wrong on your end. Either your setup is wrong, your technique is bad, or you're tying a bad knot at the lure.

To your questions:

  • I use a Palomar knot on about everything. I've caught nearly 900 bass on 6# fluorocarbon leader line (braid main line) using a Palomar knot in the past 4-5 months and can only recall 1 break-off at the knot.
  • Unless you got a bad spool of line, InvisX isn't the problem. I landed a 44.6lb. flathead on 8# InvisX year before. Used 8# InvisX for all my shakyhead leaders this year and never broke it off once. It's good line.
