Mattlures Baby Bass

Featured Replies

Just got my first Baby Bass from TW and was wondering if you guys put a treble or a stinger in the bottom of it or just fish it the way it is??? If you put a hook on, what size?

Personally, I dont put an extra hook on the baby bass as the bait is small enough for any fish in the lake to consume whole.

Start chucking that thing and you'll see.   ;)

If you were pitching the bait to a bed, I might rig up a stinger hook, but I use other baits in that situation.

Fish the Baby Bass as it is. If the tail gets bent, put it in

soft boiling water for a minute to straighten it out. A bottle

of Mend-it comes in handy, too!

You don't need special equipment, a Heavy Power bass rod

works just fine. Make long casts and let the Baby Bass fall

to the bottom or your desired depth. Then it's just a steady

retrieve, you don't need to "work" the lure. I have had some

luck in open water, along weedlines and over structure.

The strike is very aggressive, but the fight is a little tricky.

Bring the fish to you...NOW!. If you try to play the fish,

there is a very good chance you'll lose her. This advice was

given to me by Mattlures, and it works.

Is this true for the Bluegill hardbait series as well, or more for the Baby Bass?

The hardgill is much less likely to get thrown. I have not had one throw it yet. It has 2 dangling trebles. That is much harder to throw then 1 big hook. Of course you dont let them have their way and jump all over the place. Then you just asking for them to throw the bait. I still fight the fish hard and sweep down and sideways when they try to jump but I play them a little more then the regular swimbait winch.

Great; thank you, sir.  This was discussed in an older thread but I'm one for the fight and wouldn't be much interested in the winch approach, so that is very helpful.
