Reel Brake Drum Polishing

Featured Replies

I have searched the forums and have not been able to find the answer. When "Supertuning" a reel it seems pretty standard to polish the inside of the brake drum and the spool shaft where it contacts the bearings and pinion gear. What brand/type of metal polish do you guys recomend? Also can it be used with a Dremel.

2000 grit paper for the ones that have heavy use followed by a dab of never dull on a high speed dremel. Makes them look like glass.

CAUTION: Do NOT polish the spool shaft where it rides in the bearing. This causes the shaft to slip essentially taking the bearing out of the equation. Super Tuning done properly includes fine sanding then polishing of the inside of the pinion gear, the spool shaft ends, shaft section where the pinion rides and metal cast control spacers if so equipped. The brake drum can be done as well by polishing only. Please consult with an experienced tech or let them do the job.

Brasso or a similar product is used as the final polishing step. I use a Dremel but only on certain parts. It is easy to damage a spool rim or shaft.

I agree 100% with DVT, the materials are common, but make sure you understand the techniques and procedures for tuning a reel. You can quickly turn a nice reel into a damaged mess if you are not sure of what you are doing.

Heh I might just have to send them to DVT. 5 Curados and 1Citca will be expensive though. =/
