I have a 7' medium Spinning rod that I'm using right now for everything that can be thrown on a spinning rod better than a baitcast rod. Today I lost probably 10 bass on a shakey head. I'd set the hook and 4 seconds later the fish would come undone. I want another spinning rod but I'm not sure what I should get. If you were to get another spinning rod, what would it be?

I wouldn't argue with the previous poster's advice, but almost all of my fish have been caught on medium power rods. I have to think that your loss of 10 fish was for more reasons than just the rod's power. Do you typically lose a lot of fish on this rod?

I agree with marty, It's probably not the rods power. Maybe a dull hook? Maybe the plastic was bunching up on the hook? Do some more.trouble shooting before buying another rod. Unless you really want to of course.

What kind of jig heads?

What action is the rod? I suppose its possible a moderate action could hurt hook setting ability on a technique like shakey head.

What is your hook set? I side sweep on shakey heads. What is the jig head, bait, line, and rod action?

It is a 7' Medium Fast action rod. I have ball head shakey heads. 20# braid with 15 pound flouro leader.

What kind of rod is this if you don't mind me asking? If you're missing that many on a shaky head and you are using braid there are 2 possible problems. The first could be the jshaky head is junk and the hook isn't penetrating, or the rods fast action with braid is causing you to set the hook too early resulting in the fish only being lightly hooked. I think it is the first reason myself because to have it happen once or twice is one thing but 10 fish...You need a new shaky head. BTW, while the set you have is fine I think a moderate action helps when using braid, an extra fast action is what you want for using mono for shaky heads.

FWIW I had TERRIBLE hook up ratio with any kind of shaky head with a screw lock, or spring type keeper, once I switched to a barbed keeper like on the Bite Me, or Strike King heads it has not been an issue.

hmm.... Never had that problem myself, but i am a religious hook sharpener.

I would suggest either setting the hook a little easier or backing off on that drag so when you do set the hook some line comes out. You have the right line and i doubt its the rod...

not the rod. maybe your hook setting technique or your hooks are dull. Is your drag too loose?

If the hook did not penetrate the worm, you did not have the fish on. Two questions: are you "Texposing" your hook, and are you sure they were hits from bass? Maybe the rod caused one maybe two misses, but ten, I heavily doubt it.

Push the point of the hook out of the other side of the worm just until the barb is almost out of the worm. I'm using a 6' 8" M/F with 8lb fluoro, and homemade ballheads with the corkscrew keeper and don't miss many fish with them. I set the hook as soon as I feel a fish. If you wait to long the worm will ball up in the fishes mouth and you'll set the hook back into the worm a lot of the time. Most shakeyhead worms are only 4-7 inches long, so it doesn't take a fish long at all to get the worm in it's mouth far enough to get the hook. Make sure you reel fast and keep tension on the fish after the hookset in case the hook isn't buried in to the barb. It shouldn't be your rod or line that is making you lose fish, it has to be happening because of something else.

I skin hook the worm when I throw a shakey head, they were defiantley fish because I would feel them pull back and then come off.

Yea definitely not your rod. If you are texposing correctly, it will not take much pressure from the bass to release the hoopoiint from the worm. When you feel the fish, try doing a reel set instead. I rarely miss fish on a shakey head. Not sure if you menitoned but what size worm are you using, if its 6 inches or bigger, try using a 4 inch. They could just taking the tail end.

I've been using Roboworms, not sure of the exact size but roughly 6-7inches
