My Bass Are Very Aggressive Nowadays

Featured Replies

They have been just crushing top water lures around sun up and sun down at my 8 acre pond. I'm using super spooks and they are getting crushed like crazy!

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I'm missing about 2/3rds of the bites. They are powerful bites...not sure if I should jerk immediately when I see the bass grab it or wait a few seconds but I must be doing something wrong. Those are pretty large hooks on the super spook but maybe they are still too small.

I'm not sure if I'm jerking the lure out of their mouth or if they are spitting the lure out before I have time to jerk.

God it so fun though...would be funner if I landed more :)

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

You should definitely wait a good 2-3 seconds before setting hook, that should solve your missed hooksets.

wait until you feel the weight of the fish pulling on your line, then lay into it. dont just wait a few seconds cause sometimes they smack it and miss. if that happens just keep working in normal cadence.

OK...I was yanking right when I saw them come up and grab it. I missed them I guess and if they missed the lure I wasn't giving them a 2nd chance cuzz after I jerked it would fly up and almost hit me. Thanks guys...I'll try a delay from now own.

i miss more topwater fish if i really focus on the bait,it just goes against to many insticts. i like to look at something else and keep the bait in my perifrial. the delay of me getting on target really helps me hook up

Sounds like your pond maybe at the spawn peak ;)

I hate to tell you this, cause you'll catch these lunkers now... I had same prob.... go to tackle shop and buy some split o rings.... don't need to buy any more hooks... put the o rings in and then the hooks....the hook will set deeper in the water and you'll get a solid and I mean solid hookset....

Also, wait until you feel the fish pull...let me know if this helps- but I know it will...
