Just curious, does anyone here use a 7.1 gear ratio for spinnerbaits. I know they are primarily for plastics, jigs, and other bottom contact baits.

Sorry, I'm retired. I keep forgetting today is Sunday. Everybody is probably out fishing.

When the curados first came out in 7 to 1 I jumped all over them and got a few revos in high speed ratios too. Nice for getting the bait through unproductive water quick, shoot out a second cast. Now Im not so thrilled with it. To me it makes a reel feel weak. Im getting a reel made this coming week that'll have a 4.7 to 1 ratio. Talk about culture shock! We'll see.

Some folks use high IPT reels to burn spinnerbaits. Me, I use 6.4:1 reels (~26 IPT) for most spinnerbaits up to 1/2 ounce, and use a 5.2:1 (~21 IPT) for spinnerbaits above 1/2 ounce. I can move the lighter baits fast enough with a 6.4, and with the really heavy spinnerbaits with big blades, the mechanical advantage of the 5.2 reel is appreciated by my tired old wrists...(I'm retired too!)

I use on that is 7.0:1 with 28" IPT and I love it but I also love burnning spinnerbaits (which happens to be myy favorite bait). I have also used my Quantum Smoke 150 7.3:1 34" IPT and I really like that one too. The reason is like I said before, I love burnning spinnerbaits but my older hands don't like it so much so the faster reel are great as I can reel the bait at a normal pace and it is still going pretty good and I don't think it feels weak or strained in any way even but the spinnerbaits I use for burnning have downsized blades.

I would recommend a 7:1 for most situations fishing a spinnerbait. they are great burning spinnerbaits and also getting your bait back to the boat quicker for maximum efficiency. However I will use a lower gear ratio,a 5:1 or something like the one you are getting made if i am fishing cold water and need to slow roll the bait or if Im fishing those heavy 1 ounce plus spinnerbaits on ledges

It is easy to slow down than speed up.It is alot of work to fish a slower reel and fish at high speeds all day.

I did also retire last May,MAN this is nice to be able to fish alot more. The down side is my wife has me cooking some.

I just reel faster or slower, I don't pay much attention to ipt...........also retired.

I use a relatively slow reel for spinnerbaits, 5.8:1 or about 24 IPT. I prefer it over my 7.1:1. 32 IPT Zillion.

I also like a slower gear ratio. Tried it with my 7.3 quantum burner, didn't work out for me. 5.something is perfect for spinners in my book.

I use a 5.0:1 & yes I can burn it easily
