Im getting the cabin fever and thinking about going out and trying to fish from shore.
it was warm all week but today is cold, and was rainy. im thinking about going and fishing a jig on the rip rap along the dam of a small conservation lake.
would i be wasting my time?

Whether you catch anything or not, it seems like a good "waste of time" to me!
I suppose a lot has to do with where you live, but here in the Mid South we're
catching a few. You might want to take some soft plastics that can be fished
weedless, too. Rip rap tends to have an appetite for jigs, especially when you
are fishing from shore.
Good luck!

I shore fish all the time, does that mean you think I waste my time everytime I fish?
Current multipurpose setup: St Croix Avid 7' MH, Curado 201E7, P-line 15lb Cx or C21

should have put where i live. Northern missouri.
temps were in the 45-60 all week today is high of 37
should eb a good waste of time like you said, but catching some fish would definetly make it a better use of time.

If you have a passion for fishing, then its never a waste of time. It's almost as if your asking for our permission to go.

its not that im asking permission its that i have never fished in this cold of water, and i am not the most experienced fisherman, so if the bass are never going to be in the area i can fish right now, im not going to go and be cold and catch nothing and have no chance of catching anything.
I have a passion for fishing when i can catch fish, not when its darn near impossible to catch anything. and i came here to find out if there was a possibility that bass would be remotely shallow right now

Yes, you have a chance at catching a bass in 37 degree weather. You missed the point though. Fishing is trial and error. Bass migh bite today in 30 degree weather and might not bite tomorrow in what would seem like prime conditions. You go fishing whenever you can. and have a good time, even if you don't catch anything. .

I've been wasting my time on the shore all winter long. I've been catching bass too. Even pulled a few out though the ice. The cold water will slow the bite way down but even in the dead of winter they have to eat, just not as often. Spending a day on the water is never a waste of time.

Well it was a waste of time, as the lake was frozen ha ha. frozen enough to not be able to fish, but not frozen enough to ice fish.

I live in Northeast Kansas and caught fish from the bank yesterday. Even though it's raining and not that warm out the water isn't any warmer than the rain, maybe even colder. I wouldn't be afraid to go out in it if you can find something that isn't frozen.
Shawnee, KS. Don't get to fish tournaments much because of work. I fish everywhere within about a 2 hour drive. I have a couple boats but nothing fancy. I spend a lot of time on smaller lakes but fish La Cygne, Melvern, and Perry quite a bit too.

Too bad about your lake being iced over still op, keep an eye on it though because it might ice out soon. As soon as it does ice out you can get out and work on your casting and lure presentation for when those fish are ready to bite. I'm a hobby fisherman myself but I did put in a lot of time for Largemouth Bass at ice out last year here in CO and was surprisingly pleased with how well I did in 45-50 degree water.
This year my lake iced out 3 1/2 weeks earlier than last year. I've fished it three times in 4-5 hour sessions in my float tube and I've struck out each time but like the other posters said, it's nice to get out sometimes. I'll keep fishing until I start hooking up with fish because I know the water and I know the fish are there. In the meantime I'll make sure I can jig that lipless crankbait like a hair jig through the water column for when they're feeling ornery.

Everyday I'm pitchin' jigs.
