I read these type of posts all the time and for the most part they are helpful. So here's mine. I received a new Pflueger President 6730 as a gift. Please advise me as to a rod in the $100.00 to $150.00 range to pair it with. Also please be specific as to the technique it would best be suited.

What technique specific (if any) rod are you looking for? I could name good rods in that price range all day with nothing to go off of.

The reel is classified as light. 4 to 8 lb line. So Im guessing a finess technique.

I'd say a nice M or ML with an Extra Fast tip. Powell makes very nice rods in your price range, and I think they are your best option ( I own two).

I'd probably look at an Abu Veritas or a Shimano Compre in that price range. I'd bet that the Shimano will have the better options of the two.

Match the rod's specs with the reel's specs.

That is, if the reel has a test of between 4 to 8 pounds then look at the rod's specs for rods that can manage 4 to 8 pound test line.

Check out the biat weight, too.

And how are you going to fish the setup will determine the rod length.

Any good rod will do the trick for you.

Just remember that all rods have paramaraters that you need to balance with your reel, line test and bait weight.

Depending on what kind of line you wish to use and baits. If I were to use a reel that size with braid, between 10 &20# ( which I personally do) I would have the option of a stronger med rod, 7' 8/17 rod. If I chose to use mono or copoly I'd stay with 4-8# line and use a weaker medium rod, 6'6 6/12. With that size reel on either rod I would for see no problem in utilizing the majority of techniques. I do not recommend specific brands.

Just the sort of answers I was hoping to get. You guys are great. Now I'm torn between the Veritas and the St Croix Premier. I really like the look and feel of my Premier fly rod. But I've also held the Veritas. Very light. Decisions decisions.

I own a 6'6" M/F St Croix Premier Casting Rod. I love the cork on this rod, very smooth. I am using it as a jerkbait/topwater rod this year but It was great for squarebills last year. I am sure it can do almost anything effectively.

I know I'll be in the minority here but I think the best bang for the buck would be the Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth spinning rod, the one that matches up nicely would be the 6'9" medium light fast action rated for line 4# to 10# with a lure rating of 1/16oz to 5/8oz. The rod lists for $129.99 but you may find them slightly less expensive but it really doesn't matter as that rod is more than worth the retail all day long. You could fish shaky heads, drop shots, tubs and small jigs as well as worm fish. I have the 6'9" medium power, extra fast action spinning rod and loved it so much I got the 6'10" MH/MF casting rod too! Take a loke, well within your price range and something you'll be very happy fishing with, it is the most sensitive rod I every used in its price range and the reel seat was the most comfortable I ever put my hands on.

I am sure you will like it. I don't know if you know this or not but St Croix's are a little underrated so the ML will fish more like a M. Good luck fishing!
