New to the Board...Hello...
Rather new to the site myself, welcome! As to your question the best I can offer is "practice practice and pratice some more"! The reel, the pole, the weight of the lure and wind conditions all are contributing factors. Know now you will get backlashes in the begining no matter what. The key is to not let it deter you and give up. It will make you an ace at knowing how to remove the birds nest without cutting the line, mind you in the begining there will still be those bird nest that retire the reel for the day unless you respool. But this all part of the learning curve and like I said it will only make you better. stick with it, learn the adjustments for that reel and diferent lures and weight. Another tip would be to put say a 1/4 oz jig on the line, let it hang about 6 to 8 inches down from your rod tip while keeping the rod tip pointed at about 10 o'clock. Then tighten the brakes, weights ect...depending on the model reel. Then release the spool (depress the clutch bar) keeping your thumb pressed down on the line in the spool. Slowly feather your thumb up off the spool. If the lure doesn't drop (line spooling off )try shaking the rod tip a bit if it doesn't move then replace your thumb back onto the spool and losen brakes just a bit. Continue through these steps until the lure slowly drops to the ground after lifting your thumb. As soon as the lure touches the ground the spool should stop turning and no backlash should occur and this is how you know it adjusted correctly. You will have to re-adjust when using different weight lures and models. Never ever forget the strength a wind! If you throw into wind always re-adjust and tighten first! Now that your eyes are burning and I've almost put you to sleep,Good luck stay with it and tight lines!

I absolutely agree! It's just not something I wouldn't expect to see while out on the water in New England and seems to be an ongoing trend.

Looping Problem in Fishing line
All very good advice. If your fishing out of a boat I might add removing the lure flip the bail let about 6' of line out on the water and slowly move the boat to allow all the line on the reel out. Then just as you would when spooling the reel pinch the line(not to tight) between thumb and finger while respooling slowly. This has helped me a number of times. Not sure if this one was covered if so my mistake. Soaking the spool over night in warm water will aid in eliminating twist.

Gators in Massachusetts waterways
After reading another post it got me wondering if anyone else in MA has seen the gators. In 2005 during a "T" on Whitehall res. in Hopkinton MA we had a team next to us freaking out. As we pulled up to see if they were ok they exclaim" we just saw a friggin Gator man" ;D ;D ;D ;D As it is these two guys are gone and......well lets just say they're way to silly. So of course we just laughed uncontrolably(at them not with them ;D) for the next five minutes as they continued rambling on trying to get us to believe. The weigh-in was interesting to say the least. 15 guys berating and hackling the gator boys. ;D ;D Two weeks go by and the monster of whitehall continues it's mystical ways and reverberates thoughout the groups. Then this comes out in the news: http://www.thebostonchannel.com/newsarchive/4721379/detail.html We all ate crow for weeks and still to this day they won't let us forget it! :-[ Can't say i blame them. Since then there has been one alligator story after another all backed by capture and or confirmed sightings by authorities. I now believe in aliens and gators in MA

Dogs in your boat while you fish?

Evolution Heavy Cover Jigs
It's the heavy cover claim for me. If you're looking to buy a car and the sticker states that it gets 40 miles per gallon, you purchase it, drive it and find out it only gets 15 MPG is that not misrepresentation? Would you not be disappointed it wasn't as advertised?

spot remover question
I'm not sure I can take credit for this one and still be able to sleep at night! Ya see, we got you fooled into thinking we're really nice guys and like to help others. When in reality we offer help knowing that when the dredded "SKUNK" rears it's ugly head upon us we will be able to hook up the boat, speed home, jump online and pray that someone we had offered advice to has loaded the boat or caught thier PB allowing us to live vicariously through them. :-? ;D I lean towards Strike Kings floating finesse worm, the Strike King Zero as mentioned previoulsy. The Hole shot by Kickerfish, 4 inch power worm, sometimes w/the curl tail clipped to look like Yamamoto's cut tail. Generally I only use the Shaky head when the big bite is off and I really need fish in the live-well. Yet I know people that use them all day long and have had great results.

Evolution Heavy Cover Jigs
Just picked up a few verticle myself what wher the issues you had w/them? Haven't had a chance to use-em yet. Other then the pain in the a_ _ it is trying to tie to the eye w/o the skirt in the way > I didn't like the brush guard on the evo. Yeah, it's clear, but I like really stiff weedguards. The one I picked up was kinda weak. I also just was not comfortable with the overall design of the jig itself. With the jig X, I am just too lazy to want to tie a different type of knot. Yeah..... I gave up on thier knot after 4 or 5 tries and figured out how to tie the polymer to it instead.

;D ;D Hopfully the wife or dog don't visit this site often! ;D Yeah as soon as I set the hook the both of them go on point. I had to teach them that if they stay on the back deck while I land it I'll bring it back to them for a sniff. If they take one step of the back deck no sniffy wiffy and back she goes. They now wait!- Night time Bassin?
