  1. There has been a previous thread on using a baitcaster for skipping. If the search doesn't produce any results, I recall it was very tough to do and most replies recomended sticking to using a spinning reel. However, it is possible and sounded like there was a lot of practice involved.
  2. I had a very slow winter at work and got some fishing gear for Christmas and knew there were people who fish in the winter. I found this site searching for winter fishing, learned some things to get me out of the house and try in fowl weather, I met 4 really good people who share the same interest, bought the first rod and reel with a knowledge for a specific use...............I'll shut up Thanks to the moderators and the members that helped teach me. Quinn
  3. I guess fishing is more exciting for me because I am actually competing if you consider it a sport. I really love watching football and NASCAR. I cried when my Broncos finnaly won a Supper Bowl. But when I first caught my PB 4.5 lb. bass I felt like I got off of a roller coaster.
  4. Forgive me for the ignorance, but what is a "mat" (in this context please, I can see the jokes coming)
  5. I was fishing this winter on the small lake here in Marshall, MO, the weather was cold spitting occasional rain and sleet thus justifying the question. The geese keep the water thawed and everything around was frozen solid. I was walking to the bank from my Van with 2 poles in hand rigged up as a mini-van drove by and the adults asked me "You goin' fishin'?" Then the kid in the back said "Are you gona try to catch a fish?" I couldn't resist: I said "Nope, I'm going to try to rope a goose........... HEEEERS YOUR SIGN" Bill Engval (sp?) would have been proud. ;D
  6. I saw this in a small pond here, I was told by a guy that lived there that he sees this every year after the ice thaws. I was wondering why only the shad, the bass were healty, crappie were too.
  7. Ok, here it is if you must see it. It is my 1 lb 13 oz. I didn't resize it so here is the link. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll82/rugsrme/DSCF1682.jpg
  8. Go figure ?? I stocked up on black and black chart. spinners and I just happend to get some multi colored tiki stiks and had no luck on the loud spinners and most of the fish I caught were on the orange-ish tikies, my partner was using a brown jig craw trailer that was almost the same color of the water here at Little Dixie (Mid. MO)and caught most of them on that???? Yea, bass don't read the books :-?
  9. It was a nice day out to fish. Val and I caught a total of 10 fish. The three "qualifying" fish we caught totaled aprox. 4 + lbs. lots of small ones. I was looking forward to meeting more of you folks, but I was glad to fish with Jason, his wife (I forgot her name sorry) and Nathan they are good people. I was a glass is half full about the whole thing we were garanteed at least 2nd place in my first tournament and I didn't have to shell out $$ for gas for the boater ;D. The wind did die down about 2:00 or so and the banks loaded up with people fishing for crappie it was a beautifull afternoon. I'll post the one pic we took soon. Quinn
  10. Rob, Man, thats what it is all about. Watching the KC news about a 13 year old kid that murdered someone, that kid needed to go FISHING with someone, an uncle, a dad, or anyone who could take him to learn about what life is about.
  11. I don't really WANT to fish in the rain, but the small lake I fish most of the time is loaded with other folks enjoying the nice weather fishing for crappie and catfish.(not in a boat) I have had the best luck fishing in the mist, drizzle, sleet, and snow, because I am the only "fool" (at least some of the looks from the folks driving by) and have the lake to myself. NO lightning or hail though. I ain't skeerd of no rain!!
  12. I thought at least that much, I didn't think about the no wake law. I have been fishing with my brothers and haven't had the $$ to go but they take me with because they are going anyway, I'm not a freeloader, but I feel like one. I really look forward to meeting you folks. And, if we win the tounament, then..................
  13. I'm there 8:00 sharp. I do have a question for the boater that gets stuck with me, how much gas will your boat require?? I want to bring cash. It's gonna be a good day 'tater.
  14. I had my nice and nephew (twins) for a year, and i took them to a small lake, they both were casting an open face spinning reel about 25 yards and caught some small crappie. They were about 3.5 years old. Their attention span was something to deal with. I didn't get my fishing in, 'cause I was untangleing stuff from trees and stuff so take the kidds fishing to teach them how. When they get older, it is only technique from that point on. They had a blast..... That's what counts right????
  15. I maried my gf so I would have to crunch the numbers to see if a divorce would justify the cost of fishing away from home ;D I love her, she will fish with me but not as interested in trips to do it.
  16. Still plan on being there, no boat. My brother won't make it.
  17. Was the water really brown, kind of like a cup of cocoa? I wasn't on Pomme, Iwas at LOZ but every spot of water has been muddy even the ones you see as you drive by. I expect the rest to look the same with all the rain.
  18. I have not been there in a while, but want to get back and do some bank fishing. I would like any input on what you catch.
  19. My brother does that, it is kinda funny when he does the rip back and he has to follow it with "DANG". I usually say Fish On!! or Yeeaaah. One friend I fished with simply said "I'll take that !"
  20. I haven't fished Pomme, but the weather has made alot of the water here really "brown" More rain and stuff comming. Come on down and give it a shot. I agree read up on the articles that teach muddy water (darker colors) try anything you have if you have the time. Bass are biting all around this part of the great USA. If you are in MO you might find some good folk to meet you there. Quinn
  21. I still plan on getting there, I'm trying to get my brother to come with his boat, I may be able to be there with his boat without him, so far, keep me listed as a non boater but if I get there and I need to rent a row'er I'll do it. Quinn
  22. Yea it was nasty. I talked to a guy at a Marina and he said the tournaments were going rough. We were snagging all day for the paddle fish. Caught some nice ones, and didn't even bother getting the bass rigs out.
  23. The only fish I've caught this year was in that kind of "sucky" weather, if it wasn't raining, it was going to soon with wind. Dark worms, black spinner baits.
  24. Can someone post links to any articles here on BR or other places on the web that addresses the handling and releasing bass? I have changed my ways since being a member here. I used to keep all fish that were legal and eat them. Now I do focus on selective harvest in the water I fish. I usually just get them back in the water, but I know there is more to it than just dropping them back in.
