Austin, TX trip
lake buchannan and lake lyndon b. johnson are pretty close to austin, and a decent fisheries at that. there is town lake that runs through downtown. not sure if it would be worthwhile, but they to rent kayaks on it. there's also lake georgetown. Best bet on a guided trip would be travis though.

Rod Selection!?!
well it varys depending on the type of action you want. there are general ideas from each rod company, and many have begun to put what type of fishing each rod is "geared" for. i have a few general rules i follow when i purchase my rods. example for a crankbait: i want a 7 - 7.5 ft rod with a medium action and moderate fast - fast tip. the length lets me control my baits from lipless cranks to the deep divers, and the tip is what allows me to cast it out there far, as well as providing the type of hookset ill need.

Nebraska Fishing
ring fry - i dont think paap's is there anymore. with all the expansion goin on in nebraska city, i think it was put outta business. however, dont quote me on that, and i will actually be in the area late in nov, and ill post an update for everyone. there are a few lakes near grand island, however i dont remember which ones. -guess i didnt help too much, best of luck, and let me know if you find any good places!! *Disregard what i said about paap's, its still goin strong*

Getting son started fishing tournaments...
something to comtemplate. here in my area, theres a very small dock and if you lash to it, you block other people from puttin in. depending on the lake and the dock size, try teaching you son how to run the trolling motor so he can back it away from the dock and allow others to put in, then he can come back and get you once ur on the dock. also the biggest thing with the trailer, like everyone else says, is practice. in regards to tourneys, it seems that in north texas, there should be something like a weekly-evening tourneys, that should be fairly easy on the wallet (heres it $7, and happens every thursday) best of luck!

making the run?
if you have confidence that you can get the bites you need, then make the run. i know i would.

Fishing Alone or With a Buddy
its nice to have someone to coraborate your story actually, it can make the fishing easier because as long as neither of you throws the same thing, you can cover double the baits in half the time....

much needed advice
indeed, i usually dont get a bite on cranks UNLESS i hit it off something (rock, pyling, etc.) In my experience (shallow river systems) find a good break away from the channel. it may be a flat that has the channel running on the one side of it. I'd sit in the channel and cast onto the flat. however, this is shallow water, i mean less than 6 ft in the channel. best thing you can do is just go out and play around, try a bunch of things, see what sticks.

Spinnerbait rod - what to look for?
lately ive taken to throwing a falcon low rider rod (topwater) in a 6'9" length with med-light action.....every fish feels like a hog, but i never have to worry bout rippin the spinnerbaits outta their mouths. it also allows me go get a better feel for what the baits doin, be it a colorado, willow, or in-between.

my trailer rebuild project: not dial up friendly
trailer looks really good, like new. but did you remove all the paint and start from the bare metal, or jus cover the old paint? i only ask cuz ive had projects where i failed to remove all the old paint, and the new paint just fell of w/the old. of course with the bed liner material, you probably wont have to worry about it. Hope it works for ya!

Anyone catching anything in Kansas?
its been good to me in terms of tourney experience....but in s.e. kansas, because of the slot limits on the lakes i fish, you have to do it by paper. if you dont have a non-boater, you have to stop fishing, and go get the fish measured by another competitor. Its an alright group, but its more points based, tryin to get to the national chamionship, then it is about winnin money...

Trollong Motor Suggestions???
if you get the motorguide, definitely go with the tour edition. i purchased the freshwater version that only had the single cable and ive snapped it three times. they have too much torque steer and tend to start to turn wildly at speed 4 and above. also get the variable speed model as it will eat up less battery time.

Best Bait Caster Reel Quantum or Shimano under $250.00
i own numerous quantum reels, from the lower TG400cx's (now labeled "pulse") all the way up to the tour edition 1170. my energy (E770PT) reel is the best i've ever owned, no problems whatsoever. Extremely smooth, with superior casting distance. I personally believe that my quantums could out perform any other reels in their range. I've never had a problem with customer service either, just call them up, explain what happened, then ship it back and they'll send a new one. I've owned daiwas and a shimano, but i much prefer my quantums. But to each his own, in my opinion, dont shut the door on quantum til you've tried them.

New Ks. state record LM?
i havent yet, but i think the old record was a 11.7. If i recall correctly its hanging up in Johns sportin goods. (a copy) i may be wrong though. 12.31 though, dang, i know a few pits where 11's are possible but its rare to catch them.
-
Ks guys
you are correct on the ABA Tourneys: D58 - Big Hill D128 - Bone Creek D66 - KS South Ks South fishes a few lakes, however big hill and bone creek are exclusive to those lakes. Two years ago D58 and D128 were the same district, with each months tourney being held at one of the lakes. I want to say that there is also a jayhawk bass federation, but that was a few years ago, it may have dissolved. there are others around, like the hog hunters, superbass, etc. Just need to get out there and ask the local bait shops.

What would you do in this situation?
@ warmer, there a few tournament series ive seen that use a draw format. BFL's in oklahoma do if i recall right, and the ABA does no matter where the tourney is at. in response to the question, id pry have just walked up from and got on the TM. If hed ask me why i did that, id say "you seem to have given up, so im goin to run the TM, if there is a problem, then come back up here and run it." just by the way the question is set up, it seems that there arent any "extenuating circumstances". If it was batteries or somethin to that effect, it happens, but that boater should be trying his hardest to put his non-boater on the fish. If i did somethin like that, id expect the non-boater to kick me out the boat.

Dallas, Tx Area fishing
So, im currently set to be stationed at Ft. Hood in december. From what ive seen, its only 1-2 hrs south of dallas/ft. worth. Im curious as to what lakes in the area would be good to fish. I know of lewisville, because that is were the Boat U.S. college national championships have been held, and ive been to Fork which looks like a 3 hr drive from dallas. any and all help would be great, thanks guys Keep the lines wet!
